UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOSEPH D. TATEM, OF AYER JUNCTION, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,236, dated January 15, 1878; application filed November 28, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DAVIDSON TATEM, of Ayer Junction, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Desk and Side Table, of which the following is a specilication:
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of my improved desk and side table. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line y y in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
,My invention consists in a leaf hinged to a frame, having eyes by which it may be hung from hooks projecting from the wall, the said leaf being supported, when in use, by a hinged brace, which may be folded inward, so as to permit the leaf to drop when not in use.
Referring to the drawing, A A are castings, having the eyes a and brackets b. The castings are connected by a piece of board, c, which is fastened by means of screws to the brackets b, and to the main portion of each casting a slotted piece, d, is secured. The two pieces d are connected by a cross-bar, e, which rests against the wall when the device is suspended for use.
To the piece c the leaf or table B is connected by hinges f. There are cleats, g, on the under side of the leaf B, between which the upper end of the rule-jointed braces h are pivoted. The lower ends of these braces are pivoted in the slots of the pieces d. The braces h have a shouldered joint, t', at or near the center of their length, which is capable of folding inward, so as to permit the leaf B to fall.
Instead of placing the cross-bar e at the back of the slotted pieces d, these pieces may rest against the wall, the castings A being Offset to admit of such arrangement.
By changing the relation of the jointed braces to the leaf, it may be supported in either an inclined or horizontal position.
This device may be employed asa portable desk or as a side table for household use. It is particularly adapted to the use of expressmen and others who require a desk that can be easily moved from one place to another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A desk and side table consisting of the connected castings A A, having eyes a and brackets b, the slotted pieces d d, connected by cross-bar c, the hinged leaf B, and the shoulder-jointed braces h, as shown and described.
JOSEPH DAVIDSON TATEM.
