UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MARTIN, 0F HARTFORD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONVERTIBLE CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,930, dated April 2, 1878 application filed December 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MARTIN, of Hartford, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination-Chair, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved chair.- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement employed as an ironing-table. Fig. 3 represents the device in position for use as a step-ladder. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the device as adjusted for receiving garments to be brushed. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the chair.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the combination, in a single piece of furniture, of a chair, an ironing-table, a step-ladder, and a commode, the several parts being arranged with reference to cheapness and convenience.
Referring to the drawings, A is a box, having formed on it legs a b, the legs a being extended backward to receive braces that support other parts of the device. The front of the box is hinged, to admit of introducing a vessel, and in the top there is a hole, 0, to be used when the device is employed as a commode.
The chair-bottom B is attached to the back 0 at right angles, or nearly so, and is pivoted near its front edge on a rod, d, that is attached to end pieces 6, which are secured to a board, f, that rests upon the box A.
To the front edge of the board f a board, 9, is hinged, which is provided with a hook, that engages aneye projecting from the front of the box A. Two rods, h, are inserted in the rear edge of the board f, and are bent downward, and at their lower ends are bent outward and inserted in holes in the legs a.
A strap, 41, is attached to the box A and to I the board f, to limit the motion of the latter.
Braces D are secured to the bottom of the chair and to the lower end of the chair-back, for supporting the steps is 1. Between the extreme lower ends of these braces a board, m, Is pivoted, which is capable of folding closely against the back, in which position it is held bty thle button a, which engages a slit in the s ep Brace-rods 0 are pivoted to the braces D, and are capable of engaging the holes 10 in the side of the box and the holes gin the end pieces c.
When the device is used as a chair, it is arranged as shown in Fig. 1. To convert it into an ironing-table, the back and seat are turned on the rod d until the back 0 is in a horizontal position. The ends of the brace-rods o are then inserted in the holes q in the end pieces 0, to retain the back 0 in its horizontal position. While an article to be brushed is being placed upon the back 0, the back is placed in an inclined position, and retained by placing the ends of the brace-rods in the holes 12 in the end of the box.
After stretching the article to be ironed over the back 0, its end is placed between the end of the back and the pivoted piece m, and secured by folding the latter against the under side of the back or ironing-board O, and securing it by means of the button a.
When the device is used as a step-ladder, the back and seat are turned on the pivot, so as to invert the back. The board at is then turned down, so as to form the upper step of the ladder. The box A forms the first step, the chair-bottom B the second, the steps kl the third and fourth, and the board m the top or fifth.
To use the device as a commode, the cover 9 is unhooked and turned up, and the board f, together with the chair back and bottom,
. are swung backward on the rods h, so as to expose the hole 0 in the box A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The box A, having in its top the hole a, the board f, connected by rods h with the box A and having end pieces 6, and the bot= tom B and back 0, in comb nation substantially as shown and described.
2. The pivoted board m, having the button n, in combination with the back O and step vl, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN HENDERSON MARTIN.
