UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES A. LEE, OF OANASTOTA, NEWr YORK.
FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,268, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed September 8, 1896. Serial No. 605,081. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t 77ml/ concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Lun-of Oanastota, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable foot-rests for chairs.
In the drawings, Figure l showsa perspective view of my improved foot-rest. Fig. 2 shows a section of the same in extended po'sition. Fig. 3 shows the same in folded position. Fig. 4 shows details of a hook-like catch employed in the construction of the frame. Fig. 5 shows details of a double hook employed on the adjustable arms of the device.
The frame of the device consists of a pair of bars l l, connected by cross-bars 2 3 and provided with supporting-legs 4 4 on the outer end.
It will be understood that the inner end of the frame is supported on the base of a chair,
and the arms l l are adapted to slide under or draw out from the base of the chair.
In the construction shown in Figs. l to 5, inclusive, the frame is provided with acrossrod 5, on either end of which are mounted the slotted arms G G, the rod passing through the slots of the arms. These arms are connected at their upper end by a spindle or bar 7 and carry at their upper or swinging ends the stooltop S, which is hinged thereto at 9. On the cross-bar 2, at either end and opposite the Varms G are secured hooks 10. These hooks l0 are adapted to be engaged by either of the hooks l1 Il on the back side of the arms 6. These two hooks 1l are preferably mounted on acommon base, as shown in Fig. 5.
By the lemployment of the two hooks 1l Il the stool-top may be given two elevations with respect to the frame, the lower one of which is shown in Fig. l and the higher one in Fig. 2. Of course it will be understood that hooks ll can be employed to give several variations in adjustment; but I deem two sufcient.
The relative size ot' the rod 5 and the slot a; in the arm Gis such that no side play is permitted, and when the hooks ll are engaged with the hooks l0 the arms are rmly secured. There is, however, provided at the eXtreme lower end of the slots in the arm 6 an enlargement x/ on the side, which when the arms 'G are folded into the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, receives the bar 5 and forms a sort of hook, preventing the stool-top, with its arms, from sliding backward and forward in the frame. The rela-tive arrangement of the rod 5 and enlargement of the slot x is as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the lower hook ll is engaged with the hooklO thebar 5 will not be opposite the enlargement so', but a little above it in the slot, whereby the arms are irml y held from the swinging movement while the hooks are in engagement.
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination in a foot-rest of thev es arranged as described, mounted on the cross-rod and provided with hooks ll, ll, and the stool-top hinged to the upper end of the arms.
In witness whereof I have afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. A. LEE. Witnesses:
D. C. TwoGooD, N. STAFFORD.
