A.. DORMITZB-R.
STEP LADDER.
Patented Apr. 7, 1891.
WITNESSESI M BY JM J; f'Z/w. ATTORNEY NiTnn e STATES PATENT @errent ANNA DORMITZER, or NEW YORIQN Y.
STEP-LADDER.
SPECFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 449,846, dated April 7, 1891.
Application filed December 20, 1889. Serial No. 334,465. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANNA DORMITZER, of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step- Ladders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. o
This invention is designed as an improvement on the step-ladder for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me February 16, 1886.
The invention consists in certain peculiarities in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings', forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a rear elevation of my improved step-ladder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with parts broken away to exhibitother parts, the ladder being closed. Fig. 3 i's a sectional side elevation thereof, the ladder being open.
In the drawings,A represents the front section of the ladder, consisting of two vertical parallel side bars ct a., held in position by cross-bars b b. The back sectionB is, as well as the front section, a rectangular frame cornposed of side and end pieces c c d d, respectively, and strengthened by other bars, if desirable. This section Bis preferably made narrower than section A by as much as the thickness of the side bars a c, and the two sections are hinged or pivoted together at their upper ends, as shown at g, so that the section B may be folded within the sides of the section A, as indicated, and so that the two sections may be opened apart for use, as shown in Fig. 3.
Secured ou the back section B, which may be first covered with a panel C of cloth, wood, or other material on its exposed face, are one or more wallets or pockets D D for holding papers, the., and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, said pockets may be held closed by means of button-holes h and pins t', or any other suitable devices.
lstep-lad der.
on the side bars c c, andthereby assist in holding the steps in position when Vthe ladder is Open, all of said steps being preferably connected with each other by rodsn, that are secured to the ends thereof near their fronts, so that all the steps may be synchronously opened and closed.
A catch and pin o o respectively serve to hold the two sections of the ladder closed together, and, preferably, a brace p, hinged at one end to a cross-bar of the section B and at the other end to the rear of the upper step, is applied for the purpose of throwing the two sections apart in open position when the steps are turned down for use and to close the sections together when the steps are closed up. Preferably, another brace q, hinged so as to swing fr eely beneath the front edge of the lower step, is made to engage its free end on a stud q', fixed in a cross-bar b, to further assist in holding up the steps when they are open and in use.
On the outer face of one of the side bars of the section A and near the top thereof is pivvOted so that it may swing laterally a sleeve r, holding a stout rod F, that may be pushed down in an inoperative position, as shown, with its terminal fork r engaged on a stud r2, or may be moved up and swung in convenient position for the support of any one using the On the opposite side of the section A is fixed a tube G in an upright position corresponding to that of the rod F, and said tube is designed as a holder for a dusting-brush, as shown at s, or other article.
In one of the upper cross-bars of this ladder a box or recess is formed for the purpose of holding matches that may be convenient to the hand of the operator on the ladder for lighting high lamps, gas-lights, dto. Vhile to add to the convenience and usefulness of this combination ladder, which is designed when closed to be suspended against a wall by a loop Y, coat and hat hooks and pins W are fixed in the frame B, as shown in Figs. l and 3.
lt will be obvious that this combination of IOO siinple devices with a step-ladder constitutes it a niost convenient and desirable article of household furniture.
I do not in every instance restrict myself to the combining of all ot the above-inentioned devices with a step-ladder; but,
Having thus described my invention, I
elailn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,-
l. The combination, in a slep-ladder, with the front and back sections pivoted together at their upper ends, ot steps pivoted to said front section, a rod connecting said steps and serving to synchronously open and close lthe saine, and a brace q, hinged to the underside et the lower step at its upper end, and engaging at its lower end when the steps are opened with a stud secured to said front section, all substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a step-ladder, with the front and back sections pivoted together at their upper ends, said back section being suiliciently narrower than the front section to fold within the saine, as described, and catches forlocking said sections when folded together, of steps pivoted to said front section, a rod coiniecting said steps together and serving lo synchronously open and close the saine, and a brace-rod pivoted at its upper end to the under side ot' the lower step and adapted to engage at its lower end with a stud on said lront section, all substantially shown and described.
3. The combination, in a step ladder, with the front and back sections pivoted together at their upper ends, said back section being stifliciently narrower than the front section to foldwithin the same, and catches for lock ingl said sections when folded together, of steps pivoted to said front section, the upper of said steps having rearward extensions engaging at their rear ends when the ladder is open, with stops secured to the side bars of the rear section, a rod connecting said steps together and serving to synchronously open and close the saine, and a brace-rod pivoted at its upper end tothe underside of the lower step and adapted to engage at its lower end with a stud on said front section, all substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, in a step-ladder, with the front and back sections pivoted together at their upper ends, oi steps pivoted to said front section, the upper of said steps having rearward extensions engaging at their rear ends when the ladder is open, with stops secured to the side bars of the back section, a rod connecting said steps together and servingl to synchronously open and close the s( Aine, a brace p, hinged at one end to a cross-bar of the back section and at its other end to the rear end of the upper step, and a brace-rod q, pivoted at its upper end to the Vunder side of the lower step and adapted to engage at its lower end with a stud on said front section, all substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, in a step-ladder, with the front and back sections pivoted together at their upper ends, said back section heilig sufficiently narrower than said front section to fold within the saine, and catches foi-locking said sections when folded together, of steps pivoted to said front section, the upper of said sections having rearward extensions engaging at their rear ends when the ladder is open, with stops secured to the side bars oi the back section, a ro'd connecting said steps together and serving to synchronously open and close the saine, a brace y), hinged at one end to a cross-bar of the back section and at its other end to the rear end of the vother step, and a brace-rod q, piyoted at its upper end to the under side of the lower step'and adapted to engage at its lower end with a stud on said front section, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, this 17th day ol December, lSSQ.
