UNITED STATES Arena FFIQEO GARRET A. GARRISON, OF PATERSON, NEXV JERSEY.
WARDROBE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,760, dated April 1%, 1885.
Application filed August 18, 1584.
To atZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GARRET A. GABRI- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State of New J orsey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in l/Vardrobes, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a wardrobe of such construction as to be handled, folded, and used with facility, which objects I attain by the construction which will be hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of the drawings shows my invention in perspective with a portion of the front open. Fig. 2 is a plan view in perspective showing the method of folding, 810.; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing shelves, hinges, cords, &c.
A represents a portable folding ward robe constructed, mainly, of textile fabric or cloth a, which cloth or textile material is secured, suitably, to theinside of a frame composed of wood having a front part, b, and ends it, which parts are suitably mitered at the corners b, where they meet, and are secured together adj ustably by means of suitable hinges, f. The ends of the frame are secured at the back to brackets g, which brackets are provided with suitable eyes, 5/. To the inside of the frame there is arranged cords 7c, having a loop on their lower end to accommodatea hook, harranged for the same in shelves 0 c", which shelves are hinged together, as shown at 0*, Fig. 3. The shel vesc c are provided with hooks at each end of the same, upon which may beh ung various articles of clothing,&c. The back portion of the cloth is taken up and across the top,and is secured on cleats arranged therefor on the inside of the ends it and front b, the end cleats supporting the top in the manner shown in l ig. 1. The textile material is joinediat the corners in the usual way, and is suitably secured to the bottom, which is composed of parts d d that are hinged together, as shown at d, Fig. 3.
In practice the wardrobe is hung to the fastenings prepared therefor against the wall (No model.)
I or elsewhere, the eyes 9 passing over such fastenings, which suspends the wardrobe to its fastenings, after which the hingesf are opened in position, as shown in Fig. 1, after which action the shelves 0 0' adj ust themselves by gravityto their suspended positions on the cords It, the lower ends of which are looped over the hooks in, after which the various articles of clothing, 8m, may be laid on the shelf 0 c and bottom (1 d by opening the front edges, 6, asshown in Fig. l. The cords Itmay be lengthened or shortened on the pins 75 to raise or lower the shelf a c to any position desired. The hooks a may be used for hang ing up dresses, 8:0. My invention may be folded and packed in a trunk by closing the hinges f and removing the brackets g from their fastenings at 9, after which the ends it are thrown inward, as shown in Fig. 2, and the frame rolled up in the cloth a. When the shelf 0 c is reached, the parts are doubled up by means of the hinges c, and the folding con tinned until the entire structure is rolled up, after which the same can belaid in a trunk or packed away in a small compass elsewhere, and is particularly well adapted for persons who travel, as it furnishes them with a light, cheap, and convenient means of accommodation for their clothes and other necessary articles, and can be hung up in many places for convenience where the ordinary wardrobe could not be used.
Having described niyinventio n and its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the cloth a, the frame I) h, for securing said cloth, the hingesf, for holding the frame I) and It in position, brackets 5/, having eyes 9, for suspending the top and cloth, bottom (1 d, for securing the bottom of the cloth, shelf 0 a, suspended from the top or frame b and hby cords It, and hooks or pins It", Zr, and a, substantially as described.
