Description

UNTTnn ETaTn's.
PaTnNT @Trueno HENRIETTA LOUISA MEHRER, OF NEV ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
FOLDENG WARDROBE AND CHIFFONIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.\310,703, dated January 13, 1885.
(No model.)
I Z'o @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIETTA L. MEHR- ER, of New Rochelle, Westchester county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Wardrobe and Chiffonier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a chiffonier provided with a detachable folding wardrobe.
rIhe invention consists in the-combination, with a chiffonier,of a detachable folding wardrobe provided with spring-catches adapted to catch on slotted plates on the chiffonier, whereby the chiffonier and wardrobe can easily be united or detached, as may be necessary.
lteference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a face View of my improved combined folding wardrobe and vchiffonier. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on 'the line w x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View of the folding wardrobe, showing it detached and folded.
The vchiffonier A is provided with the usual drawers, B, or with shelves, like a closet, or With hooks to form a wardrobe; but I prefer to construct it with drawers. -The closet or wardrobe C has a wing, D, hinged to the part C and to the back C2, the said wings being pivoted to fold inward, and being arranged on that side of the wardrobe that is to rest against the chiffonier, and which side of the wardrobe is open. A wing, E, is hinged to the inner edge of the bottom F of the wardrobe in such a manner that it can fold inward and upward, and a like wing is hinged to the inner end of the top in such a manner that itcan swing downward and inward. On the upper surface of the bottoni wing, E, a V- shaped spring, G, is fastened at each end, the ends of the shanks of the said spring proj ectl ing beyond the edge of the wing, and having the ends bent outward and toward the apex of the spring to form bevel-hooks II. The springs are held on the wing by screws, as shown, or in any other suitable manner. Like springs are secured in a like manner to the wing pivoted to the top of the wardrobe.
' In the outer surface of the corresponding side of the chiffonier A slotted plates K are held, behind which recesses L are formed.
If the wardrobe is to be held on the chiffonier, the wings D are swung out to be in line with the front and bacl; of the wardrobe, the bottom wing, E, is swung down, the top wing is swung up, and the free edges of the several wings are pressed against the side of the chiffonier. The edges of the slots in the plates K press the ends of the Shanks of the springs G together, the ends of the shanks pass through the slots, the shanks spread, the hooks II catch on the inner surfaces of the plates K, and thus hold the wardrobe on the chiffonier.
If the wardrobe is to be detached, the ends of the s'hanks of the springs G are pressed together and the wardrobe is withdrawn, the `top and bottom wings are folded against the top and bottom of the wardrobe, and the wings D are swung inward.
In place of the catches described, any other suitable catches can be used.
If it is found that the chiffonier and wardrobe occupy too much space in a room, the wardrobe can easily be detached, and if it is found that a chiffonier does not afford sufficient accommodation the wardrobe is attached to it in the manner described.
The detachable wardrobe is to have a detachable side, which can beV used to close the open side of the wardrobe when the said wardrobe is detached from the chionier, thus permitting of using the chiffonier and the wardrobe in different rooms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a chiffonier, of a detachable wardrobe, of spring-catches on the wardrobe, and slotted plates for receiving the catches secured on the chiffonier, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a chiffonier, of a wardrobe having folding wings hinged to the front, rear, top, and bottom, and of devices for holding the wardrobe on one side of the chionier, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a chiifonier, of a wardrobe having wings hinged to the front, rear, top, and bottom, spring-catches secured to the top andbottom wings, and slotted plates ICO in the outer surface of one side of the ehiffo- H, substantially as herein shown and denier, substantially as herein shown and d'escribed. scribed.
4. The combination, with a, chffonier, of' HENRIETTA LOUISA MDHRER 5 slotted plates K, secured on one side of t-he Witnesses:
same, a Wardrobe having'V-shaped springs G, HENRY J. VAN ZELM, secured to the top and bottom, the ends of the JANE VILLMARTH.
