FOLDING WARDROBE.

$PECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,975, dated May 23, 1893.

Application filed November 21, 1892. Serial No. 452,642. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. DOWNER, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding \Varbrobes or Cupboards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in folding corner cupboards or wardrobes.

In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification and in which similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a front view of the cupboard with the door open. Fig. 2 shows a front view with the front removed. Fig. 3 shows a front View with the front removed and the bottom, top and shelves folded. Fig. 4 shows a top View. Fig. 5 shows a bottom View. Fig. 6shows a section on line A-B ofFig. 2. Fig. 7 shows a top view of the device in folded position. Fig. 8 shows a bottom view of the device in folded position. Fig. 9 shows afront view of the device in folded po sition with door open. Fig. 10 shows a catch for securing the cover in open position.

Referring more particularly to the reference numerals in a more specific description, 1 indicates the front, in which is provided an opening closed by door2. On the front are rigidly secured side wall parts 3 and 4, the part 4 being wider than the part 3. The parts 3 and 4 are secured a little back from the edge of the front, having a shoulder 5 which is chamfered off at the lower end as shown at 5 to accommodate a base board. The shoulder or edge 5 allows the front to fit in place in the corner of a room without reference to whether the corner is true or not and coincides with the form of the cupboard.

To the edges of the fixed portions of the walls 3 and 4are hinged the remaining parts 6 and 7 of the side walls, which walls in open position are adapted to form a triangle with the front. The swinging edges of the wall portions 6 and 7 may be secured together in small corner of the shelf 11 is fixed stationary,

To the foot of the wall 6 is secured a fastener 14 having an inwardly extending arm having holes for the reception of screws which are screwed into the floor and secure the cupboard firmly in upright position (in Fig. 5). The projecting arm or fastener 14 is of a length to adapt it to rest on the front 1 in folded position (as shown in Fig. 8) and act as a support for the folded wall and assist in resisting the hard usage in transportation; the wall 6 being hinged to part 3 by a rule joint which will prevent, the wall being opened out much beyond its normal open position and while it could perhaps be sprung enough to let the edge of wall 7 passinside of the wall 6, then, the fastener 14 also actsas a stop against which wall 7 will strike and will prevent a novice from folding the device wrong.

The device is adapted to fold as clearly shown in the drawings in which the shelves and top and bottom are confined between the walls and front in folded position and the movable portions of the walls lie fiat upon each other and are thus safe against rough usage. The folding portions of the walls are made to lie fiat on each other by reason of the fixed portions of the wall 4 being wider than the fixed portion of the wall 3.

It will be noted that one or more of the shelves may be omitted.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is

1. In awardrobe or cupboard, a front frame, portions of side walls fixed on the front and projecting to unequal distances therefrom, and folding sides hinged to the fixed portions of the sides and adapted to be extended to form a triangle with the front, and to fold upon each other and on the front, combined substantially as set forth.

2. In a wardrobe or cupboard, a front frame, portions of sides of unequal width fixed to the front, the complet-ements of the sides hinged to each of the fixed portions and in position to form with the front a triangle, a folding top and folding bottom, combined substantially as set forth.

3. In a wardrobe or cupboard, a front, folding sides hinged to rigid fixtures on the front, the sides being adapted to fold upon each other and upon the front, a fastener secured upon the footof one of the walls having an arinprojecting at right angles from the side for the reception of a screw whereby the fastener may be secured to the floor, the arm projecting from the side to a length to adapt it to engage the front in folded position and support the folded walls, combined substantially as set forth.

4. In a folding wardrobe or cupboard, a front, folding sides hinged by a rule joint to fixtures on the front projecting to unequal distances from the front, the sides being adapted to told one upon the other and upon the front, a fastener or stop secured on theinner face of one of the sides against which the other side will engage in an attempt to wrongly fold the device, and prevent such wrong folding, combined substantially as set forth.

5. In a folding corner ward robe or cupboard, a front, folding sides hinged to fixtures of unequal Width on the front and adapted to fold one upon the other and'parallel with the front, a folding top hinged to the front and adapted to turn downwardly, a folding bottom hinged to the frontrand adapted to fold upwardly, a shelf hinged to the side which is hinged to the lower fixture and adapted to fold upwardly, all combined substantially as set forth.
