B"UNITEn STATES PATENT GFTICE.
LYDIA S. DEWING, OF NATIGK, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAR-DROBES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,682, dated July 22, 1879; application filed n April 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYDIA S. DEWING, of Natick, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vardrobes 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in wardrobes suitable to the angles of rooms.
It consists of a wardrobe composed of two sections hinged together and formed of vertically-grooved uprights and tenoned horizontal bars adapted to lit therein, a top secured to the said sections by pins, and provided witll an angular offset extending downward to keep the said sections to a proper angle, a iloor adapted to keep the sections properly spread, and a shelf bracketed or supportedin the frame, all of which will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In my drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my Wardrobe in position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the sections. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line :1; of Fig. 1.
Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in all ofthe figures.
Referring to drawings, A B are the sections, composed of the uprights C and horizontal bars D D'. These horizontal barshare tongued or tenoned to t in corresponding grooves formed in the'inner edges of said uprights. They are adjustable, and are to be iixed at given points by pins, which pass through holes in their tenons and in the upright standards.
The bars D are provided with suitable hooks, upon which garments may be hung.
The sections AB are hinged together by hinges E, so that when the wardrobe is not in use they may be folded together for storage, Ste.
Shelf F and floor G are notched at their inner angles in such a manner that when they are tted to their places in the wardrobe they form shoulders to bear against the standards or uprights C to hold the sections out to the proper angle.
The top H is made of solid wood, with an offset, H', at its inner angle, which, when said top is in place, projects down and fits against the back edges of the two sections to assist in keeping said sections at the proper angle. The said top is fixed to the uprights or standards by pins with shouldered heads, which enter suitable holes in said uprights or standards and serve to keep the sections at the proper angle.
The back of the Wardrobe is covered with some textile material b, which serves the donble purpose of protecting the Wall of the room against which the wardrobe rests from the dyes from the clothing and the clothing or contents from the dust of the room.
The front of the wardrobe is provided with curtains d, which may be secured to the top H by suitable hooks, Iand ornamented by lambrequins and lace tastefully arranged.
In taking my wardrobe to pieces for packing or storage, I first loosen the pins a, which secure the top, to release the sections, and then remove the shelves and flooring. The curtains may now be unhooked, and the wardrobe-frame folded snugly and eompactly together.
My wardrobe, when properly packed, will occupy a very small space, and when set up will require but a very small space in a corner of a room.
The bars which have the hooks for the clothing are slid in the grooves of the standards or uprights from either end. They may be of any required number, and, being adjustable, may be fixed at suitable points or heights.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
The portable wardrobe adapted to set in the angles of a room, composed of two sections hinged together, and vformed of vertically-grooved uprights G C and tenoned horizontal bars D D', adjustable in the grooves of said uprights, the top H, secured to the said sections by pins a, and having an angular oifset, H', extending downward, the floor G, and shelf F, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYDIA S. DEWING. Witnesses:
NATHL. CLARK, JAivnEis MOMANUS.
