Description

NPEI'ERB. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. u. C.
To all whom it tma/y conce/rn @has wwaesaaeww ELIAS GILL, or
NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters PatentdNo. 85,811, dated Janna/ry 12, 1869.
IMPROVE!) s ncTIoNL BUREAU.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
`Ie it known that I, ELIAS GILL, of N ew York, in the county of New Y'ork, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Sectional Bureau; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference .beinghad to the 'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved extension bureau. l
Figure 2 is a Vertical transverse section of the same. vFigure 3 is a horizontal section of the same, showing'it folded together.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates tol a new bureau, which is so` constructed that it can be readily packed together into a smallcompass when to be transported from one place to another.'
The invention consists in-constructing the bureau of a series'of sections or boxes, of which the upper ones are made smaller than' the lower, so thateach box or section can be packed into that immediately below. Each box has sliding or other doors in front or side, to allow access to its contents. The lower section is provided with a removable back, or cover, to allow the insertion of the upper boxes, while each of the upper ones may be entirely open at the bottom.
A,in the drawing, represents a'box of rectangular or other suitable form, and of suitable size. Itis made of wood or other suitable material.
The box A is provided with sliding or other doors B B in fr`6nt, and with a removable back, O, cover, or bottom.
Upon the box A is placed a box, D, which is so much smaller than A, lthat it can be -tted into the same, as in fig. 3.
The box D has also sliding or other doors B in front,
and may be' made without any bottom whatever, the` cover of A forming its bottom.
Upon D may be placed another still smaller box E, and upon that another, F, Sac., their sizes being such that F can be packed into E, and E into D, as shown in 3.
Ech of the upper boxes is constructed substantially as the box D. All have doors B, except perhaps the uppermost box, which may have drawers, in the ordinary manner.
If the boxes which are interposed between the lower and the uppermost, have bottoms as well as covers, they should have vtheir backs, bottoms, or covers made removable, so that they may receive the smaller boxes.
The boxes put together, as in figs. 1 and 2, form a bureau of nearly pyramidal form, consisting of a series of sections that can be packed together.
When the bureau is put'up, as in gs. 1 and 2, its
various compartments may be connected by means of pins c c, projecting from one box into apertures of the other box, as is clearly shown in fig. 1, the pins a being pivoted, so that they may be swung out of the way when the boxes arenestled together.
' Having thus described my invention,
I claim as' new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sectional bureau, consisting of a series of boxes put one upon the other, said boxes being of different sizes, so that they can be packed together, substantially *as herein shown and described.
i 2. The pins av,`pivoted to the boxes of a sectional bureau, for connecting the same, substantially as herein rshown and described.
ELIAS GILL.
