To all whom -zt may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SMITH, of 0skaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Meal-Chest or Bin and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which The iigure is a perspective view of my improved meal-chest or bin.

' My invention relates to au apparatus for housekeepers or grocery stores. for the more convenient arrangement and disposition of meal, sugar, coffee, spices, and other articles.

I will first describe my invention iu connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly point it out in the claim.

A representsa series of bins, placed beneath a shelf or counter, B, or in the lower part of a cupboard.

The boxes or bins A are pivoted, at the lower part of their ends, to the supports C of the shelf or counter B, or to the sides of the lower part of the cupboard, by bolts D.

rlhe upper edges of the ends of the boxes orbins A are rounded olf, as shown in the figure, and have a shoulder formed upon them, as shown iu dotted lines in the gure, to serve as stops, to prevent the said boxes or bins from being opened up too far. The

lower parts of the front edges of the supports C are beveled or rounded off, as shown in the figure, to allow the boxes or bins to be opened freely. The boxes or bins A are so balanced upon their pivoting-bolts D that the weight of the substances within them will hold them securely in place, whether opened or shut.

E is a row of drawers, placed beneath the shelf or counter B, and above the boxes or bins A, as shown in the gure.

F represents af series of shelves, or the upper part of the cupboard, placed above and connected with the counter B.

When the upper part F is made narrower than the lower part, small drawers, G, may be placed at the sides of the said part F, upon the said shelf or counter B, as shown in the figure.

It should be observed that two of the bins or boxes A may be placed one upon each side of a support, C, and may be both pivoted to said support by the same bolt.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patcnt- The pivoted bins A D, drawers E G, and counter B, constructed and arranged together, as and for the purpose described.
