u irs sm'res AT'ENrorrics 1,978,097 IRONING 1 Henry T. Yates, Akron, Ohio Application November '13, 1933, Serial No. 697,868
2 Claims. (01. 3-10 My invention relates to improvements in ironis such that when the legs 2 and 4, main open ing tables, and particularly to the class of such position,as in Figs. 1 and 3, thebars' 6, 6a are tables as are collapsible, and its principal obrigidly aligned-between them; i and when the ,iects are, first, to provide a table with large skirt board 1. is elevated to horizontal position the '6 clearance, having supporting legs capable of behanger bar 6b, attached thereto and to the for-. 60 ing folded under the table within its limits, enward end of the side bar 6, securely holds the tirely out of the way when folded. A second oblegs 2 and 4 apart automatically; and when the ject is toprovide an ironing'table of this charboard "1 is lowered for folding, the said hanger ter, having ease and simplicity of folding operbars 61) impelsaid legs together by the action of 10 ation, and which opens and closes with a single the side bars 6 on their pivots 6d, crcoking said motion, and will not fall apart accidently when alignment. closed, nor self collapse when set up. A third Moreover, by the means aforesaid, the legs 4, 4 object is to provide a better braced table, the are inclined rearwardly a limited distance, so as several braces cooperating to produce greater to stand at a slightly obtuse angle with the level 16 sturdiness and rigidity and endurance, thus afof the board 1, and thereby make the structure 70 fording absolute safety and satisfaction to the more rigid.
user, and at the same time easily foldable for For a like purpose it is desirable to have the disuse, storage and shipment, and other incilower ends of the legs stand farther apart than dental advantages, all as hereinafter fully set their upper ends, and, when folded, to lie parallel 20 forth and stated in the appended claims. to each other within the limits of the board, so 75 My invention is illustrated by the accompanyas to be out of the way in handling, storage and ing drawing in which similar letters and figures shipment. I of reference indicate like parts. To accomplish these objects, the following Referring thereto, Fig. 1 is a side view of the means-are provided-The legs 4, 4, are normally entire table, opened ready for use. Fig.2 is a spread apart below a limited distance by a pair of 80 plan view of the table folded together; Fig. 3 is a bars 13, 13, which pivotally engage the pair of perspective view of the entire table at an angle; side-bars 6a, respectively, at or near midway beand Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion on the tween the ends thereof, and toggle joints a, a, in dotted line 3--3 of Fig. 3, showing the means for the cross-bars 11, 11, respectively, at their junclooking and unlocking the foldable members on tion with the short members 11b, 11b. the under side of the board. Said pair of cross-bars are pivotally attached The table 1, its legs or standards 4, 4, and the to the legs 4, 4, near theirupper ends, and at or middle or sloping legs 2, 2 constitute the princinear the middle thereof, as at b and c, (Fig. 3) pal frame work of the device, the legs 2 being of and to accommodate the swing of said cross-bars 35 two parts secured together at their lower ends, upon their axis '7, they are broken by said toggle 9o. forming a foot 9. Their upper ends are spread j ts sp ct v y, as best Shown in apart and secured pivotally underneath the rear by action of the spreader- bars 13, 13, connected end of the table board 1 to a base strap 1c and th r t at th r pp ds. an at their lower clips projecting therefrom, as shown in Fig. 2. ds t th m m a of the s d p 40 The upper ends of the legs 4, 4, are pivotally v y, W -3- secured in like manner, so as to be foldable up- The arrangement a d act on is such that when Wardly when collapsed. To enable the legs 4 and the legs a folded p y against the board, 2 to be folded upwardly inunison, a pair of side as in Fi 2, th y a d awn w y so as t be bars 6, 6, on opposite sides of the table, are each parallel therew t and are spread apart a t d 45. respectively secured to the sloping legs 2 on the distance at their lower ends and rigid y held apart pivots 6d, (Fig. 3), about midway between the the y wh n nfold d o w y, as in Fig. 3. pivots 4a and 10, and to the hanger bars 6b which h ta is pp d in p p s t y m ans depend from the under side of the board 1, a of a support bar 3 which is anchored in the fork fixed distance, and are pivotally secured thereto of the middle legs 2, on a pivot 10, and is shiftably 50 on clips 6e. attached to the underside of the board 1, by means .105
Each side-bar has an extension bar member 6a, of a short link 3a hinged to a block 3d, so that aligned therewith and secured thereto on a pivot when the support bar 3 is shifted to the forward 60 at a point about midway between said pivot 6d position shown in full lines in Fig.- 4, the parts and. its lower end at leg 4 to which itis pivotally are locked and rigidly held therein, and when 55' secured, as shown in Fig. 3. The arrangement shifted to the position shown by the dotted lines,
all parts are automatically unlocked, and may be folded together simultaneously.
To more effectually brace the several members, the outer ends of the legs 2, 2, are sprung apart in construction, and the long side bars or levers 6 are also sprung by the spreading of the legs 4 when the table is set up; the spreader bars 13 also act forcibly to tension the back cross bars, making a plurality of distinct braces cooperating automatically and simultaneously to support and hold the ironing table in the strongest and most rigid position, incapable of Wobbling or break down in use.
The several parts may, of course be modified ithin the scope of the invention, and I do not limit my claims to mere matter of form. What I claim and desire to secure is 1. In an ironing table, the combination with a table board, a pair of foldable legs pivotally attached thereto at one end thereof, an intermediate foldable leg split apart at its upper end and pivotally secured to said board adjacent the pivots of said end legs and inclined downwardly therefrom, a pair of side brace-bars, each pivotally connected to its adjacent inclined leg intermediate its ends at a fixed distance from its upper end, a hanger-bar depending from the under side of the board and pivotally secured thereto at about right angles with its adjacent brace-bar to the end of which it is pivotally attached, a short extension-bar pivotally secured to the opposite end of said brace-bar and adapted to fold thereon when the end legs are folded, and pivotally secured to its adjacent end legsaid several members cooperating to fold and unfold and stabilize said legs, substantially as set forth.
2. In an ironing table, in combination with a board, a pair of foldable legs pivotally secured at one end thereof, an intermediate foldable sloping leg pivotally secured to said board adjacent the pivot of said end legs, a pair of side brace-bars, each pivotally connected to said sloping leg intermediate its ends, a hanger-bar pivotally secured to one end of each brace-bar and to the under side of said board and depending therefrom at about right angles therewith, an extension-bar pivotally secured to the opposite end of said bracebar and aligned therewith, and to the adjacent end leg and adapted to fold thereon when said legs are folded upwardly-said brace-bars and end member's cooperating in folding and unfolding and stabilizing said legs, cross-brace-bars operable between said end legs and pivotally secured thereto at both ends, a toggle joint in each crossbar near its upper end, and spreader-bar pivotally connected to said toggle joints and to said extension-bars, respectively, to spread apart and stabilize said end legs laterally when unfolded, and a support post for said board anchored at its lower end pivotally to the lower end of said sloping leg, and a reversible link hingedly connecting said post and board to permit shifting said upper end longitudinally a limited distance, to lock and unlock and stabilize said foldable members by its reversal, substantially as set forth.
