IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING OR PORTABLE DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,683, dated January 4, 1876 application filed October 29, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, J AMES MILLER, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Portable Desk, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure l repscnts a perspective view of my improved portable desk, shown folded for transportation; and Figs. 2 and are perspective views of the same, showing the desk, respectively, in closed or open position for use. 1

The invention relates to an improved portable desk for offices, that may be folded into small space for transportation or storage, and set up readily into open or closed position for use.

rIhe desk is specially adapted in cases in which a frequent moving is rendered necessary.

The invention consists of a top section with drawers and pigeon-holes, to which the lower section, made ot' folding front, side, and rear walls, is hinged, to be locked by suitable fastening devices into open or folded position.

In the drawing, A represents the upper desksection, which is arranged in any suitable manner with sliding' drawers, pigeon-holes, Sto., and closed by a hinged and downward-opening front, B. The upper desk-section A is supported on the lower hollow section C, which is formed by hinged rear, side, and front walls, that are locked together by hooks and eyes, or other suitable devices, a. The front D of the lower section C is made o f two parts, which are hinged to the side walls E, to be thrown with the same in upward direction over the lower front parts are turned in to close up the lower section of the desk.

Detachable moldings d, of suitable shape,

and cornerpieces c are applied by suitable tenons and mortise-holes to the'upper edge of the top section, and at the junction of the desksection, so that the desk represents, when in use, a better outside appearance.

The moldings may readily be packed up with the desk when the same is folded for transportation, so that they are available when put up for use.

Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the upper desk-section, provided with drawers, pigeon-holes, and hinged front, with hollow lower section, made of folding rear, side, and front walls, that are capable of being locked in position for supporting the upper section, or inclosing the n same for transportation, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
