UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
RUSSEL B. SIGAFOOS, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN.
I FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,010, dated December 18 1 894. Application filed January 1894. Serial No. 496. (N0 11105013 thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a combined extension table and sideboard, the one to be wholly contained within the other when not in use; and it'con'sists incertain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings, and
subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an article of furniture constructed according to my invention, the table portion thereof being extended; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a like view of a portion of the structure illustratingthe inclosing of the table within the sideboard, and Fig. 4, a plan view of said structure partly broken away and in section. Figs. 5 and 6 represent detail transverse sections respectively taken on lines 5--5 and 6-6 of Fig. 4..
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a sideboard similarin general appea r-' ance to those of ordinary construction, but in carrying out my invention I provide this sideboard with an upper compartment having such length, breadth, and depth as may be found most desirable. Each end-wall of the aforesaid compartment is provided with a permanent guide B for the innermost section 0 of an extension-table slide, and as the latter may be of any of the well known makes detail description of those herein shown is not deemed necessary, although as a matter of preference the slide-sections are of such length and bearing, one upon another, as to prevent sagging.
In carrying out my invention it is preferable toprovide the inner end of each slide section 0 with avertical stop D, the purpose -of the latter being hereinafter specified.
Hinged to the slide sections 0 in front of the vertical stops D is the innermost leaf E of the table top, and all the leaves in the series are joined to each other by alternating lower and upper hinges so as to fold together and stand on edge within the aforesaid compartment of the sideboard whenever it is desirable to utilize the space necessary for the extended tabler Joined to the outermost sections F of the extension slides. is a rail G and depending from this rail are two legs H, the latter being preferably mounted on casters.
The bottom of a sideboard and a horizontal partition] that constitutes the bottom of the upper compartment, above specified, are provided with recesses b for the upper and lower portions of the legs H, when the table is-out of service, these legs being then within closetportions of said sideboard and concealed by doors J having depending portions 0 that close the lowermost of the aforesaid recesses. It is also to be observed that when the table is out of service the leg-rail Gis utilized as a portion of the front of the sideboard, and that the upper compartment has a hinged side or closureK that may form another portion of the sideboard front when thereis extension of said table. To hold the hinged device K in raised position within the sideboard, I employ a turn-button L or other suitable device, and I prefer to provide alternate leaves of the table-top with depending ears M, the latter being arranged adjacent to the lower hinges inward from the'same.
When the lugs M are employed I make use of any suitable device that will offer resistance to said lugs when the table is being pushed into the sideboard whereby certain of the joints are automatically broken and said leaves compelled to rise and 'stand'on edge. The abutting device for the lugsmay be a lever N pivotally connected to a stationary portion of the sideboard as herein shown, and the movement of this lever in either direction on its pivot may be limited by suitable stops (1 also illustrated in this presentation of my invention.
In practice the outermost leaf in the series the turn-button or other holding device, and
that side of said leaf that faces outward may be carved or otherwise ornamented.
The stops D above specified prevent the leaves from tilting toward the back of the sideboard, and the operation of folding said leaves will be readily understood from the illustration in dotted lines Fig. 3.
The structure herein shown and described constitutes apreferable form of my invention, but various changes may be made in matters of detail without departure from the general result.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sideboard provided with extensible supports arranged to contract therein, a series of leaves that are connected by alternate lower and upper hinges and have their bearing on the supports, projections depending from certain of the leaves, and a resistance device in the path of the projections, substantially as set forth.
2. A sideboard having its bottom provided with front recesses and a horizontal partition also provided with recesses, leaf-supports contractible in the sideboard above said partition, a rail that normally constitutes a front portion of said sideboard and is joined to the outer ends of the leaf supports, legs dependingfrom the rail to come within said recesses, and swinging doors having depending por- 'tions that close the front recesses in the sideboard-bottom, substantially as set forth.
3. A sideboard having its bottom provided withfront recesses and a horizontal partition also provided with recesses, extensible supports contractible in the sideboard above said partition, a rail that normally constitutes a front portion of said sideboard and is joined to the outer ends of the supports, legs depending from the rail to come'within said recesses, doors having depending portions that close the bottom-recesses, a series of hingejoined leaves on said supports, and suitable means for compelling an automatic folding of the leaves coincident with a contraction of the aforesaid supports, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
