COMBINATION-TRUNK.
Application filed January 24,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
1906. Serial No. 297,674.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMMIE C. h TCARTHUR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Conneaut Lake, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Trunks, of which the arranged therein. The body portion of the trunk is formed with three transverse slidable drawers 5, having handles 6 6 and locks 7 of a conventional form. The end of the body portion 1 of the trunk adjacent to the hinged end compartment 2 is provided with a small drawer 8 and a compartment '9, which following is a specification, reference being i may be used as a hat box or compartment.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination-trunks; i and the invention has for its primary object to combine a chiffonnier or dresser and a garment compartment or closet within a trunk, whereby the trunk may be conveniently used as a chiffonnier or dresser, thereby providing a trunk particularly adapted for tourists and travelers who may be traveling in a remote part of the country where a chifl'onnier or dresser is not accessible.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel trunk wherein a plurality of com partments are formed in which various garments may be placed, whereby they cannot become creased or disfigured while being transported.
A further object of this invention is to combine a mirror and desk within a trunk, together with numerous compartments, whereby the trunk may be used as a writing-desk or table at any time desired.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a combinationtrunk which will be compact in form, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved trunk in an open position, illustrating the desk portion thereof, the dresser and the garment closet or compartment; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the trunk closed.
To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved trunk of a shape similar to the ordinary type of trunk, with the eX- ception that it may be slightly longer; but the shape and dimensions of the trunk are obvious, as the same may be made of various sizes for different purposes. The trunk comprises a body portion 1, having a hinged end had therein to the accompanying drawings. I
hinged lid or partition 3, having a mirror 4 The compartment 9 is provided with a hinged lid or partition 10. Slidably mounted between the drawer 8, compartment 9 and the uppermost drawer is a slide or plate 11, which is pulled outwardly to serve as a desk or writing-pad.
The body portion of the trunk 1 is provided with a hinged lid 12,- which is adapted to inclose the hinged end compartment 2, together with the drawers and various appurtenances of the body portion 1 of the trunk. The lid 12 forms a garment closet or-compartment 14, having hooks 15 arranged therein to support garments. The compartment 14 is provided with a hinged lid or partition 16, whereby the compartment 14 maybe closed irrespective of the body portion 1 of the trun The entire trunk is preferably constructed of wood or leather and is bound by metallic strips 17, which are placed to protect the edges and corners of the trunk and the adj oining edges of the various compartments thereof.
When closed, the hinged end compartment 2 is adapted to fold into engagement with the body portion 1 of the trunk and be held in engagement therewith by the lid 12, which fits down over the adjoining edges of the hinged compartment 2 and the body portion of the trunk, it of course being understood that the lid or partition 10 is closed, together With the desk-slide and the drawers 8 and 5 of the trunk.
WVhen the trunk is used as a dresser and writing-desk, it is stood upon its one end and the lid 12 of the trunk swung open similar to the door of a closet. The hinged end com partment 2 is then swung upwardly to place the mirror 4 in a vertical position, whereby a person standing in front of the trunk can use the same or any of the various compartments thereof, the body portion of the trunk, together with the end compartment 2 thereof, resembling very much a dresser when the trunk is open and being used.
I do not care to confine myself to the numerous compartments into which the trunk IIO may be subdivided, and such changes as are permissible by the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A trunk embodying a rectangular body portion, a plurality of drawers slidably mounted in said body portion, a desk slide or plate mounted in said body portion, a hat compartment or box formed in said body portion above said desk-slide, and adjacent one of the drawers, said compartment having a laterally-opening hinged lid, an end compartrnent hinged to said body portion, a lid hinged to the lower edge of said end compartment, a mirror arranged in the lid of the end compartment, a lid carried by the body portion of the trunk, and equal in length to the combined height of the body portion and the end compartment and adapted to close said body portion and said end compartment, said last-named lid having a compartment formed therein, a lid or partition hinged to the hinged edge of said last-named lid, and adapted to close said compartment, substan tially as described.
2. A trunk embodying a body portion and a hinged end compartment, said body portion having drawers slidably mounted therein, a desk slide or plate slidably mounted in said body portion, a mirror carried bysaid end compartment, a lid hinged to said body portion and equal in length to the combined height of the body portion and the end compartment and adapted to close said end compartment and said body portion, said lid having a compartment formed therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
AMMIE C. MCARTHUR.
