UNITED STATES PATENT OFFrcE.
JOHN M. FORBES, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO MARKS MENDELSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION PIECE OF FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,136, dated. November 1, 1904.
Application filed July 27, 1903. Serial No. 167,234. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. FORBES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Piece of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of furniture which combines in one piece the functions of several separate articles of furniture such as a desk, wardrobe, bookcase, chiffonier, mirror, umbrella-stand, &c.; and the object thereof is to provide all these separate articles of furniture in one case, and thereby save the space occupied by the several articles of furniture mentioned when made separately. I accomplish this object by means of the article of furniture herein described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved article of furniture. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, the swinging door carrying the desk being open and the door covering the chiffonier-compartment being also opened, disclosing the front of the chiffonier and umbrella-rack. 4
In the drawings, A is the case inclosing various parts comprising the difierent articles of furniture mentioned. In the end to the right I have shown the bookcase W provided with shelves. In the central part of the easing is contained the wardrobe B, having the necessary clothes-hooks B disposed in rear portions of the wardrobe, above which I have provided the shelf C, leaving in the upper part of the wardrobe above the shelf C space for storing various articles. This wardrobe is closed by the swinging door D. In the central part of this swinging door I have mounted the writing-desk E, the back of which is shown in Fig. 2. The front of the desk is shown in Fig. 1 in the open position, the table portion E thereof being hinged in the front of the casing and held by the supporting-straps e. In Fig. 1 the table is shown in the open position ready for use. When closed up, the table portion E forms a panel in the front of the case. This swinging door is held in the closed position by the catch f. In the rear corner of the opening left for the desk I have provided a receptacle F for the reception of waste paper. The wardrobe and the desk will occupy all the space from the front to the rear of the case.
The chiffonier Z, covered by the door G, is shown in the closed position in Fig. 1 and in the open position in Fig. 2. On the inner side of this door is mounted a mirror H. In the chiffonier portion I have shown drawers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. These drawers extend rearwardly and occupy the portion of the space next to that end of the casing. On the upper part of the chiifonier I have provided a receptacle V for the incandescent light J This light is arranged to fold up and be moved into this receptacle, when it may be closed by the door M, and thus removed from view. To the right of the chiifonier I have provided an umbrella-rack X. Disposed in the front of the chiffonier is the foldable platform R, hinged at S so that the member S may be folded back upon the member S, and when thus folded the platform may be turned inwardly against the front of the chiffonier, being hinged at N, and be out of the way when not inuse. This platform forms a rest for various toilet articles, and the opening over the shelf T forms a receptacle for these toilet articles when the same are not being used, the same being held on the shelf by the shield Q. I have shown means to light with electricity the desk by the incandescent light I and the mirror by the incandescent light J. These lights are connected with the storage battery K. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.) This battery may be stored in any other appropriate position in the casing. In the end to the right in Fig. 1 I have shown the bookcase portion open, the door L being arranged to close the same.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a chiifonier comprising a body portion, a series of compartments formed therein and a door for permitting access to the interior of the body portion of the chiifonier and to the compartments therein, of a shelf or platform, the platform consisting of a section-hinge secured to the ohifi'onier and of the chifi onier to permit the closing of the IQ a member-hinge secured to the section at such an angle to the point of attachment of the section and chiffonier, that the said member Will lie When in open position, in front of the open door to retain the door in open position, the member adapted to fold against the section and the section and member adapted to be folded against the series of compartments door.
In Witn ess that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 20th day of July, 1903.
JOHN M. FORBES. Witnesses:
