COMBINATION EvIo S Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d N V. 29 19 21 Application filed March 18, 19.21. Serial no. 453,504.
combination dresser and bed and has for its principal object to provide a single article of furniture which is arranged. to house a bed and provides storage means for articles of wearing apparel and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of this nature which may be ornamented in any suitable manner and which when folded will provide a compact structure occupying a minimum amount of space.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel means forsupp orting the bed when extended, in such a manner as to avoid any possibility of its folding when occupied.
With these and other objects the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of this article of furniture showing the same closed,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, illustrating the device in open position, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates in its entirety this improved article of furniture, which comprises a central compartment 6 flanked on opposite sides with compartments closedby suitable doors 7 which are hinged as at 8. The lateral compartments may be provided with shelves or drawers to receive articles of apparel, and suitable locks 9 may be arranged on the doors to prevent unauthorized persons from getting access to the interior of the compartments.
It is to be understood that the top of the article of furniture maybe provided with an ornamental board as at 10 and if so desired a clock or other ornamental feature 11, may be added.
The open or front side of the central compartment 6 is closed by doors 12, the upper and lower edges of which are provided with grooves 18 for the reception of pins 14 carried by the top and bottom walls of the compartment so that when the doors are swung open they may be pushed back edgeways disappearing into the compartment in order to reduce to a minimum the surface exposed and increase the accessibility of the compartment.
Secured to the rear wall of the compartment 6 and extending forwardly therefrom are rlgid spaced arms 15 to the outer ends of which are pivoted the side bars 16 of the folding bed frame and extending between the side bars is a suitable spring 17 which forms the support for the mattress. Formed adjacent the forward ends of the side bars 16 and extending longitudinally therethrough are slots 18 for the reception of headed pins 19 carried by the foot piece 20. Suitable supporting legs 21- are pivoted as at 22 to the side bars and'when the bed is in extended position are turned downwardly 1n the position illustrated in Fig. 3 to engage the floor upon which the article of furniture rests.
In order to further support the bed frame suitable links 23 are pivoted to the side bars 16 adjacent the pivots 22 and pivotally connected to the links 23 are relatively long links 2 1 the inner ends of which are pivoted to brackets 25 secured to the rear wall of the compartment 6 near its upper end.
In use it will be seen that when it is de sired to fold the device the foot piece 20 is moved rearwardly so that the'pins 19 slide through the slots 18 whereupon the links 2 1 are pressed downwardly into the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 3 and the side bars 16 swung upwardly'on their pivotal connections with the arms 15. Then the doors 12 may be closed and secured by a suitable latch 26. It will be understood that the reverse operation takes place when it. is desired to utilize the device.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodi ment of this invention, it is to be understood that certain minor changes, in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may beresorted to without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
