Application filed August 9, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopewell, in the county of Prince George others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference bemg had to the accompanylng drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, with the cover raised and the chair drawn outwardly and the seat and back thereof raised.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same with the chair removed.
Fig. 3 is a side view of theinvention in trunk form.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4, Fig. 2, with the cover down.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 2.
The invention has relation to a combined trunk, desk and chair, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the body of the trunk, having the appearance externally of an ordinary trunk and provided with an upwardly extending rear portion 3, upon the same level as the closed cover 4, said cover being hinged to the part 3 at 5.
The cover is provided with desk compartments or drawers 6, closed in front to retain the contents thereof in position when the cover is lowered, the cover when raised being stopped and held in vertical position by suitable means (not shown).
The front 7 of the trunk is hinged to the body at 8, and may be lowered to rest upon the ground or floor, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, upon its hinges as a center.
Located normally within the trunk is a chair 9, having its front leg hinged to said front at 10 by means of a transverse rod 10 engaging slots 11 of a channel piece 11'-of said front, the chair being raised upon its hinges until its rear legs rest upon the front 7, after which the chair is moved bodily outwardly, the transverse rod 10 moving in Specification of Letters Batent.

Serial No. 113,923.
the guide slots 11. The chair is provided with a back hinged to the seat at 12 and raised to upright position when in use, a spring abutment 13 being provided for said back.
Located also within the trunk and above the folded chair is a shelf 14, upon which a typewriter 14 usually rests, said shelf having at its sides depending racks 15, engaged respectively by pinions 16, at the ends of parallel shafts 17, said shafts having at their rear ends bevel gears 18, in mesh with bevel gears 19 of a rear shaft 20, a short central shaft 21 having a bevel gear connection 22 with the shaft 20 and being provided with a crank arm 23.
A leaf 24 is hinged to the trunk body at 25, and is provided with a connecting rod 26 to said crank arm, said rod being hinged to said leaf at 27, whereby when the leaf is swung from its normal central horizontal position to rest upon the trunk body at one side thereof, as shown in Fig. a of the drawings, the shafts will all be rotated to turn the pinions 16 and thereby raise the rac s and the typewriter shelf, said leaf being turned through an arc of about 180 degrees, and being held in its new position, to hold the shelf and typewriter in raised position, owing to the location of the hinge 27 with respect to the hinge 25.
The typewriter when lowered within the trunk is located within a box-like inclosure, of which said shelf forms the bottom, partitions 28 of the center recess 29 forming the sides, and a rear partition 30, covering in the rear shafts and gearing, forming the back of said inclosure, of which the folding leaf 24: forms the top and-a second hinged leaf 31 the front so that the typewriter will be well inclosed and protected. Drawers 31 are provided at the sides of the trunk body, between the trunk ends and the partitions 28. The center recess 29 is designed to receive the knees of the user of the desk.
When the parts are to be again inclosed within the trunk, the leaf 24 is folded back to central position, the shelf and typewriter being at the same time lowered within the trunk, the back of the chair is folded down upon its seat, said seat is lowered, through its screw support 32, the chair is turned down bodily upon its hinge, to rest upon the front of the trunk, and the chair is moved bodily inwardly of the trunk in the guideways 11, the front l f of in? trunk. bein I then moved upwardly upon its hinge to nor mal raised position and the top 38 of the trunk turned down upon its hinge to engage the top edge of said front leaf and hold it in raised position.
I claim:
' 1. A combined trunk, desk and chair, comprising atrnnk body having a hinged front, and a hinged er ver provided with file compartments, a Chair having a pivotal and reciprocatory connection with said front, a central vertically movable shelf normally located above the folded chair, and means for raising said shelf, said body having a central recess for the knees of the desk user wherein said shelf and said chair are normally located.
2. A combined trunk, desk and chair, comprising a trunk body having hinged front, and a hinged cover provided with tile compartments, a chair having a pivotal and reciprocatory connection with aid front and a hinged back, a central vertically movable shelf normally located above the folded chair, and means for raising said shelf including a foldable member having operative connection therewith, said body having side drawers and a central recess wherein said shelf and said chair are normally located.
3. A combined trunk, desk and chair, comprising a trunk body having a hinged front, and a hinged cover provided with file compartments, a chair having a pivotal and reciprocatory connection with said front and a hinged back, a vertically movable central shelf normally located above the folded chair and provided with depending racks, and means for raising said shelf including pinions engaging said 'acks and a foldable member having operative connection. with said pinions, said body having side drawers and a central recess YE herein said shelf and chair are normally located.
4. A combined trunk, desk and chair, comprising a trunk body having an up wardly extending rear portion, a hinged front, and a cover hinged to said rear portion and provided with file con'ipartments, a chair having a pivotal and reeiprocatory connection with said front, a vertically movable central ghelf normally located above the folded chair and provided with. depending racks, means for raising said shelf including pinions engaging said racks and a hinged leaf having operative connection with said pinions, said body having side drawers, and a central recess wherein said shelf and said chair are normally located.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
