INVENTOR Bourdan CW Q W Mg] BY WITNESSES W ATTORNEY BOUIRDON CARY, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
SEWING-MACHINE TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed November 25, 1916. Serial iQo. 133,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BoURDoN CARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved sewing machine table for use in connection with a drop head sewing machine and for use as an ordinary table or cabinet as well as a sewing machine table so that when the sewing machine is not in use the same can be entirely concealed and the table arranged as an ordinary table and to form a handsome piece, of furniture, the improved sewing machine table being especially adapted for use in small houses or apartments where space is limited.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved table of this class which is simple in construction, is handsome in appear ance, is strong and durable, and which may be readily arranged for use as a sewing-machine table or for use as an ordinary table at will.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure '1 is a perspective view of my improved table or cabinet when arranged for use as a sewing machine table.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the table when arranged for use as an ordinary table.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown the table or cabinet is provided with four supporting legs 1 and with aframe 2 in which is a machine compartment 3 for a drop head sewing machine, a compartment 4 for an electric motor to guide the machine,
and a draw 5. The front of the frame is also provided with sham draw front 6, 7
.to balance and improve the appearance of the table.
In accordance with my invention the table is also provided with an inner top 8 and an outer top 9. The inner top comprises a fixed rear member 10 and a hinged front member 11 which is provided with hinges 12 at its front side so that said member can be swung down in front of the table and may be also swung upwardly and rearwardly and arranged in closed position. The members 10 and 11 are provided in their opposing edges with recesses 13, 14 respectively, which register with each other, and which clear the sewing machine when the latter is in raised position for use.
The outer top 9 is connected by hinges 15 to the rear edge of the fixed member 10 of the inner top 8. Said outer top may be turned downwardly and arranged on the rear side of the table, out of the way, when the table is in use as a sewing machine table and when, the machine head has been lowered into the machine compartment the outer top 9 may be then turned forwardly and arranged in horizontal position above the inner top 8 to conceal the sewing machine entirely and cause the table to present the appearance of an ordinary table.
My improved table may be made of mahogany or of any other suitable material, is here shown as built on straight colonial lines but may be madeof any suitable style and to conform to any desired period. The draw 5 may be used for machine accesso= ries or for any other desired articles.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim is .An article of furniture of the class described comprising a frame having a compartment for a drop head sewing machine and also provided with an inner top and an outer top, said inner top comprising a rear member and a hinged front member, the hinges of the said front member being at the front side thereof, and said members being provided with recesses in their opposing sides to clear the machine when said hinged member is in closedposition, said outer top being also hinged and having its hinges arranged at the rear side of the rear member of the inner top so that the outer top is adapted to be arranged either in vertical position at the rear of'the article of furniture to uncover the inner top or in horizontal position to cover said article of furniture and the inner top.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
BOURDON CARY.
