FURNITURE Filed May 27, 1951 IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept..- 12, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture and has particular reference to a combined bed and chair.
The principal object of this invention is to produce an article of furniture which to all intents and purposes is an ordinary chair, but'one which may be unfolded in such a manner as to create an elongated surface which may serve as a bed if desired.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is neat in appearance.
A still further object is to'produce a device which is simple in construction and therefore economical to manufacture.
A further object is to produce a device which is light in construction and therefore easily transported from place to place.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part 1 of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my chair in folded position, v
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the chair in unfolded position, a
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the chair parts showing the positions they will assume during the unfolding operation, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail'view showing the arrangement of the hinges for the front legs and foot board. 1
It often occurs that in apartment houses room is very restricted, and therefore it is necessary to have an article of furniture which will serve several purposes, and it often occurs that an extra bed is needed, which would under ordinary circumstances take up too much room in an apartment. Therefore, by providing an article of furniture which may serve the purpose of both a chair, and in an emergency, a bed, it is obvious that this article of furniture will be of considerable utility.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a frame to which areattached legs 6 and legs 7. The legs 6 will be considered the front legs and the legs 7 the rear legs. The legs 7 extend upwardly, above the frame and serve to support a head piece 8. Hingedly secured to the frame 5 as at 9 and 11 respectively, is a seat section 12 having arms 13 and 14. This seat portion has hingedly attached thereto a foot portion 16 to which are hingedly attached as at 1'7,
supporting legs 18. A foot board 19 is also hingedly attached to the foot portion 16. When I the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the seat portion 12 is folded down upon the frame 5, the foot board 19 is folded against the foot portion 16 and the legs 18 are also folded against the foot portion. These legs have their tips terminating between the foot portion and the arms 13 and 14, while the foot board 19 abuts the head piece 8 and the foot portion 16 virtuallly becomes the back rest of the chair.
arrangement of the legs 18 and foot board 19v with the back 8. This assembly together with the remaining structure of the chair permits a quick utilization of the article of furniture for either the purpose of an attractive and durable chair or as aneat and comfortable bed.
It will thus be seen that the above structure produces a very neat chair when used as such, and an equally useful bed when in unfolded position.
It. is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken-as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim;-
In a device of the character described, a chair frame having front legs and back legs, the back legs extending upwardly and supporting a head piece, a seat portion hinged to said frame and having arms attached thereto, a foot piece pivoted to said seat portion and having a foot board pivoted thereto, supporting legs hingedly connected to said foot piece and adapted to support said foot portion when in extended position, beveled shoulders formed on the back legs, said arms when in folded posit-ion lying upon the frame and abutting said shoulders, with the pivoted edge of the foot piece resting upon said shoulders, said foot board resting upon the upper edge of the head piece, with the supporting legs and foot board lying flush against opposite sides of the foot piece.
