Description

(Mode1.)
A..G-. ELLIOTT.
COMBINED BLAGKBOARD AND MAP CASE.
No; 258,635. Patented May 80, 1882.
UNTTED STATES ATEN'T Trice.
ASA O. ELLIOTT, OF NEW JERUSALEM, OHIO.
COMBINED BLACKBOARD AND MAP-CASE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 258,635, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed September s, 1281. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA O. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Jerusalem, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Case for Holding and Exhibiting School Maps and Charts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to cases for holding and exhibiting maps, charts, blackboards, andd rawin gs in school-rooms, Sundayschools, 8m, and is fully illustrated in the anneXed drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a plan view of the case, and Fig. flan enlarged view, the corner being broken away to show the hinge.
Ais the main case; B,the hinged and grooved end; 0, the slides on which the maps are, and I) E the grooves in which the slides move; F, the front of the case, which may be a blackboard-surface or decorated with some ornamental design.
Heretofore school-1n aps have been suspended on the wall, free to the sport of the wind, liable to flap and fall, and to be covered with flyspecks and dust, or have been arranged to slide on strings, or hinged to swing around. The second of these is liable to the same objections as the first, and the third form is also objectionable, requiring entirely too much room to show the maps, (which are now generally arranged in sets of five or six,) and too expensive on account of multiplicity of hinges or bearings.
In myinvention I endeavor to assemble the maps in a neat, compact, and convenient form. The maps are secured to the slides by gluing, tacking, by a clamp, frame, or otherwise. The slides I prefer to make of two pieces of veneered wood, with grain crossed, though they may be made of any suitable material.
My case is rectangular, and is fitted to hang on the wall or rest on any support. One of the sides of my case is hinged at G, so as to abut againstthelowerend ofthecase when let down, forming a solid support. When not in use the end shuts up, and the case forms an attractive piece of furniture.
When it is desired to use the maps the hinged side is lowered into position and the map desired to be shown is run out in the proper groove the required distance, a stop being arranged to prevent it coming out of the case too far. The end of each slide is properly labeled, so that the map wanted can be seen at a glance.
The front of my case can be made a blackboard for use in map-drawing, the map being run out in its slide convenient to the pupil and contiguous to the board.
I am aware that a map-case is in use having a blackboard-front; but itis hinged, and when the case opens the board swings back out of position and cannot be used. 1 thereforelimit my claim to a blackboard-front ready for use wheirthe maps are being shown.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with the case having a blackboard surface and internal grooves, adapted to hold a series of maps in a vertical position, of the grooved end hinged to the case, and adapted to form a horizontal support for the maps when withdrawn from the case, substantially as described.
' 2. The internally grooved case A, having the hinged and grooved end B, substantially '7 as described, and for the purpose set forth. A. O. ELLIOTT. Witnesses:
