A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHUS Y. ANDREWS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO LANGFELD BROTHERS (it COMPANY, OF SAME PLAOE.
WRITING-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,040, dated August 12, 1890.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ADOLPHUS Y. ANDREWS, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Writing-Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to writing-desks; and it consist-s of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a compact and convenient writing-desk which is particularly adapted to portable desks for the use of travelers, &c.
In carrying out my invention I employ a suitable box to contain writing implements, &c., and an extensible pad supported by the box and laterally movable thereon. By this construction the writing-pad is always held firmly in place and forms an excellent cover for the receptacle, which may, if desired, be formed in the box under the pad.
The details of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the drawings which follows.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved writing -desk with the writing-pad partly extended. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same, upon an enlarged scale, on line at m, Fig. 1; and Fig, 3 is a perspective view of one of the detached guides of the movable pad.
Ais a suit-able box, which maybe provided with the usual ink-bottle B, &c.
C is a receptacle formed in the box A, which may be used to contain paper, letters, &c. The frame of the box on two sides of the recepta-. cle O is raised or extends upwardly to form guides E for the pad or cover D, and these guides are provided with grooves c, in which the side edges d of the pad D are adapted to move. Carried by the lower face of the pad or cover are angular guide-pieces F, the vertical portions of which bear against the inner sides of the box A below the grooves c. I prefer to arrange these pieces F near the two frontcorners of the pad or coverD. These angular pieces F also limit the movement of the pad D and prevent it slipping out from Application filed April 21, 1890- Serial No. 348,771. (No model.)
the ends of the grooves c. The pad or cover may be provided with a flap G, adapted to be folded over upon it when the Writing-desk is closed, the flap G being provided with the usual compartments for writing-paper, envelopes, &c. If desired, the pad may be provided upon its upper face with a blotter held in place by corner-pieces 9; but with these details my invention is not concerned.
It will be seen that by the construction shown in place, movement being prevented in every direction, except that of the guiding-grooves c,and'may easily be moved to open the receptacle 0 Whenever desired. This movement of the cover or pad D inalateral plane is particularly advantageous in a writingdesk, as it does not render it necessary to remove the letter which is being written or other articles from the pad when it is desired to open the receptacle 0, as it is necessary in a construction in which the pad or cover is hinged. When the pad D is extended, the flap Gr may be turned under to form a support for it.
Instead of forming the guiding-groove 0 upon the outer side of the box A in the frame of the box, it may be formed by means of an angle-piece, preferably of metal, covered with leather or other suitable covering secured to the side of the frame of the box A by means of screws 6 or otherwise, with its horizontal portion a slight distance above the upper face of the edge of the box to form the guidinggroove 0, as shown in Fig. 2.
WVhile I prefer the minor details of construction here shown, it is apparent that they may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the box A, provided with a receptacle 0, formed with a fiat rectangular upper rim, said box A being provided with parallel guidinggrooves 0 immediately above and adjacent to said flat rim, the extensible pad D, having its edges 01 fitting into the grooves c and its lower surface resting upon the fiat rim of the receptacle 0, and the an gular guide-pieces F, carried by the under sur- 60 and described the writing-pad D is firmly held i face of the pad D at some distance from the edge thereof and bearing upon the inner side walls of the receptacle 0 below the grooves c.
2. A Writing-desk provided With a receptacle, guides upon the sides of the receptacle, and a laterally-movable cover for said receptacle having its edges guided by said guides and provided upon one of its sides with a flap adapted to be folded over the face of the cover. 3. The combination of the box A, having an upwardly-extending guide portion E upon one side, provided with a guiding-groove c, an angle-piece secured to the other side of the box to form a second groove 0, corresponding to and parallel with the former, and the extensible pad D, guided by said grooves c c.
4. The combination of the box A; having an upwardly-extending guide portion E upon one side, provided with a guiding-groove c,
A. Y. ANDREVS.
