Description
I. HAGGERTY.
DESK SLATE-HOLDER.
Patented Oct. 10. 187-6. 1139.1.
. .w Va I IN NTU 54110 fag/ UNITED STATES JOHN HAGGERTY, OF COREY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO V. G. CURTIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESK SLATE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentZNo. 183,157, dated October 10,1876; application fi ed June 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN HAGGERTY, of Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Noiseless Desk and Revolving Copy-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the .art to which it'pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a noiseless writing and drawing desk with revolving copy-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which fully illustrates this invention, A represents the box or frame of the desk, constructed of any desired size and of about the usual form. The entire box or frame A is covered with felt B, or other similar material, preventing all noise in moving the desk.
In the back or highest part of the desk is a rotating spool, consisting of a shaft, 0, with heads or disks D D secured thereon. The shaft 0 passes through the sides of the frame A, and has knobs E secured on its ends, and the disks D D are fastened on the shaft within the box and close to the sides thereof.
In the inner sides of the disks 1) D are made grooves a a, to receive the copy-plates G G, either one of which can be brought into view by turning the spool by means of one of its knobs, such plate being immediately back of the slate, or rather above the same, the top of the desk being left open at that point, as shown, for such purpose. Within the box A are inclined racks H H, to hold the copyplates G, when not in use, in the revolving spool. At the front, within the desk, is fastened a rack, I, for holding slate-pencils, said rack being provided with elastic bands b b, under which the pencils are placed, and by which they are held in place.
The top of the desk is formed of an ordinary slate, J, inserted in a grooved wooden frame,
L. This frame L is entirely covered with strips d d, of felt or other suitable material, the edges of which are folded into the grooves in the frame, and held there by the slate entering said grooves, where the frame is put around the same and fastened. At the corners the strips d are sewed or otherwise fastened together with felt beads or ridges e e, attached thereto as shown. The slate-top J L is held at the back edge by two projecting moldings on the box or frame, and at the front by a spring-catch, R. It is prevented from moving laterally by a knob or small projection, 2', in the slate-frame entering a recess, J0, in the spring-catch.
By the felt-covering d being inserted in the groove of the frame all rattling of the slate in the frame is effectually prevented, the covering also preventing noise against the desk. The felt beads or corners e, in addition, prevent any sudden shock to the slate on falling, and help to prevent noise against the desk.
The entire slate is easily detached when required for use as a school-slate.
Having thus fully described this invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A writing and drawing desk for schools, composed of a frame, A, entirely covered with felt B, or other similar material, and having a removable slate-top, as herein set forth.
2. The rotating cop v'holder, consisting of the shaft 0, with grooved disks D1), arranged within a desk-frame, A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the desk-frame A, with felt covering B, copy-holder U I), inclined racks H, pencil rack I, with elastic bands b b, and the noiseless slate-top J L, with springcatch R, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of May, 1876.
JOHN HAGGEItTY.
