No. 282,087. Patented July 31, 18831 WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. JOWETT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES ANDERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
.ADJUSTABLE DESK ATTACHMENT FOR DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,087, dated July 31, 1883.
Application filed November 9, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS L. JowErr, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Desk Attachment for Drawers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable desk attachment for drawers, which can be used for read ing, writing, for supporting music, and for other like purposes.
The invention consists, primarily, in a leaf hinged to the inner surface of a drawer-front, at the upper edge, and a binding-screw, which leaf can be swung down into the drawer, or can be raised to rest on the edge of the top plate of the table, so that the said leaf can be used as a desk for supporting a book, music, 810.
It consists, further, in the combination, with the above-referredto parts, of a binding or holding screw, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drawer provided with my improved adjustable desk attachment, showing the drawer opened and the attachment raised. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same, showing the drawer closed and the attachment lowered.
A leaf or plate, A, is hinged to the upper edge of the front, B, of a drawer, O, in such a manner that the said leaf can be swung down into the drawer, or can be raised to be inclined upward from the upper edge of the front piece of the same. The front of the drawer is provided at its upper edge and on its outer surface with a molding, D, which projects above the upper edge of the front of the drawer, and forms a ridge against which the lower edge of a book, manuscript, piece of music, &c., can rest. A binding-screw, E, 5 passes through bottom of the table or other piece of furniture, and its end passes into a longitudinal groove, F, in the under surface of the bottom of the drawer.
The upper surface of the leaf A can be cov- 5o cred with cloth or leather or left plain, as may be desired.- The leaf can be made solid, or perforated in the style of music-racks. The leaf A can be attached to any drawer.
The attachment is adjusted as follows: the drawer is opened and the leaf A is raised, and then the drawer is closed more or less. The leaf then rests upon the edge of the top of the table. If the drawer is opened but slightly, the leaf will have a considerable inclination, and if the drawer is opened farther the inclination of the leaf will be decreased. The drawer is locked in the desired position by means of the binding-screw E. When not in use the leaf is out of sight entirely. The books, music, &c., can be placed in the drawer and the leaf A folded down on the top of them.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7o 1. The combination, with a table or other piece of furniture, of the drawer G, the leaf A, hinged to the inner surface of the front of the said drawer, and the binding-screw E, passing through the bottom of the table, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a table or other piece of furniture, of the drawer 0, having a longitudinal groove in the under surface of its bottom. the hinged leaf A, and the bindingscrew E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS L. J OVETT.
