SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,101, dated November 1893.

Application filed April 1, 1293.

To all whom; it may concern:

Be it known that I, INGRAHAM GOULD RICH: ARDSON, of the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Foldthe construction of wall desks and to so reduce the manufacture and cost thereof as to place the same within the easy reach of all classes of people.

To this end my invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations all as hereinafter described and particularly polnted out in the claims and will bemore readily understood by reference to the ac'comback board 3, which board is of considerable length and is provided at its lower end with a cleat 4. Upon the top of the case 2 Ijpreferably provide a short back shelf 5 of the width of the back board 3, and having retainlng side pieces 6. The lid 7 which forms the front of the case is secured thereto by hinges 8, arranged at its lower edge and is adapted to be secured in place by a lock and key for which an opening 9 is provided. When the lid is raised the link is raised also in its retaining loop 12, While upon turning down the lid the loop falls-upon the ledge 4: and forms a brace or bracket to support the outer end of the part 7. Upon the end of the lid 7 I hinge an auxiliary lid or arm-rest 13 adapted to be thrown out into the position shown in Fig. '3, and when in such position adapted to be supported by the link, which is then thrown to one side thus forming an extensible support. Within the case I provide a shallow tray 14. adapted to contain stationery, &c., and hinged at its lower edge to the cross rail 15 provided on the inside of the case. Across the space beneath this cross rail and the bottom of the case I extend a small coiledspring 16 having itsends secured to opposite sides of the casin g and forming an expansible pocket adapted to receive letters, envelopes, 85c. Suiiicient space is left outside of the tray 14 when folded to admit the combined thicknesses of the

It is obvious that I may alter the general form and shape of my writing desk, or adapt the same for use in the tops of trunks and like places, all without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the case 2, having a hinged lid 7, of a support for said case, a fixed slide or loop 12, an extensible or auxiliary lid 13, and the rectangular link 10 pivoted upon said lid 7 and adapted to be moved laterally to support said auxiliary part as well as the part 7, substantially as described.
