' DESK-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 21, 1919.
Application filed September 22, 1917. Serial No. 192,787.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, FRIDOLIN SGHIMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a so-called desk table which is in the nature of a portable device or attachment adapted to be applied to a table, or, in fact, to a flat support, and, when applied, to afford the conveniences of a desk having various compartments, such as drawers and open receptacles.
To the above ends, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of' parts hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the so-called desk table applied to an ordinary flat top table, such as a library table or card table, the wings of the said desk table being opened out;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the desk table or attachment showing the wings thereof folded and some parts being broken away.
The ordinary flat top table is indicated, as an entirety, by the numeral 1. The desk table or attachment has a flat rectangular base 5 and is provided on its rear half portion with a raised fiat top superstructure 6, in which are drawers 7 and an open central space 8. To the front edges of the sides of the superstructure 6, wings 9 are connected by hinges 10 for swinging movements in a horizontal plane. These wings 9 contain open compartments or pockets 11, and on their inner edges they are preferably formed on curved lines, so that when turned outward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there will be clearance for the elbows of a person using the flat exposed front portion of the base 5 as a writing or working table. When the wings 9 are folded, as shown in Fig. 3, they form, with the superstructure 6 a rectangular structure that is closed at all sides. To cover up the closed wings, the flat top of the superstructure 6 is formed with a hinged cover plate 12. When the wings are turned outward or unfolded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cover plate 12 will be turned over on top of the superstructure 6 where it will be entirely out of the way.
Preferably, the abutting edges of the wings 9 are formed with overlapping rabbets 9 and also, preferably, the lower edges of the rectangular sides of the wings, at their lower edges, are formed with rabbets 9 that engage a corresponding rabbeted edge 5 of the base 5. The cover plate 12 maybe provided with a shoulder or cleat 13, which overlap the rectangular upper edges of the wings and prevent the same from being moved from closed to open positions while the said cover plate is turned downward to operative position, as shown in Fig. 3. It is, of course, obvious, however, that a suitable lock may be applied to positively secure the wings and cover plate in closed positions.
One purpose of the curving or cutting away the wings on their inner sides has already been noted, but it may be further stated that by this formation, when the wings are closed, there is afforded a considerable space within the closed cabinet for containing books, or other articles.
The cabinet described will preferably be made of wood and when nicely finished, will have a very neat and attractive appearance. It is a complete desk and table in itself, and as it is portable and capable of being easily moved from place to place, it may bereadily used in connection with any suitable support and, when out of use, it may be easily placed out of the way. Moreover, it may be made at comparatively small cost.
What I claim is:
A desk table of the character described, comprising a base plate, a superstructure covering a portion only of said base and containing compartments, and having a hinged cover a horizontal position, extends over the uncovered portion of said base, and wings plate which, when turned into hinged to the front portion of the sides of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature said superstrnc%1re and moiabletfrom ilosed in presence of two Witnesses.
