EASEL SUPPORT Filed July 2, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 held in the open position while: being read.
Patented Dec. 9, 1936 UNITED STATES JPATENT OFFICE SIDNEY LEAR, or onnmm'ro'wn, rnnns nvnnm EAsEn surron'r I Application and m 2, 1929. Serial No. 875,562.
The object of my invention is to a, book cover which will protect the inding of a book and which will also form an easel or rest for the book, so that the book can be over a book as in Fig. 7.
In order to secure a book to the easel,
edge of the easel, and short retaining flaps My invention also relates to means for holding the covers of a book firmly to the easel, as well as to means which will allow for the fitting of books of different sizes to the easel. is
A further object of the invention is to provide an easel support for a book or other article, which will be capable of being folded when the easel section is in the closed p0sias shown in Fig. 2,-and the flaps 5 .and 7 fit ti b t h it-i te d d t support th bet-ween the leaves of the book'and the cover body portion, then it will lock the body porand are clamped thereto, firmly retaining the tion in the open position. ook to the easel and In the accompanying drawings: be freely turned.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of theeasel, In many instances it is desirable tosupshowing it in the open position and with the port a book on an easel so that it can be book omitted; conveniently read, particularly in a sick Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. '1, showing room or on a table adjacent to an easy chair, the book secured to the easel book cover and a d in order to provide su h a support I in reading position; combine with the book cover an easel, the Fig. 3 is a side View of the easel with the body 1 of the book cover forming a support book in position; I for a book, and hinged to this body at 10 F ig. 4 is a plan view of the cover with is an easelsection 11 which can be moved to the easel support folded in a fiat condition thesupporting position as in Fig.1, the out- Fig. 5 is a rear view of the easel book cover, Ward m v f he ea el support being in a flat condition; controlled by strips of tape 12 which are se- Fig. 6 is a perspective i cured to the back of the body portion 1 and easel book the easel support as shown. ted; p The narrow strips 3 are continu'edthrough r Fig. 7 is a detailed fr g ntar vi w thesupport 11 as clearly'shown-in Figs. 1, 4 showing a portion of the cover folded over 9 5 n the ng m s 4 are al o ona book; I tmue so that when the support is folded Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 8-8, Fi 4; and mg the easel 1n thls manner,
Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9-9, I Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the book cover, which may be made of cardboard or other suitable material and which may be clovergad with paper or leather as; desired.' he ook cover is made of two side sections 22 and two narrow sections 3-3 on each i fig ggig $323 book v?! ngld when side; of the centre, and these sections arelgon- I order t insure th openin nlfctedh together by thin hinge strips 4,"-so
t at t e easel and these two can be secured together by any suitable fastenings 9. In the present instance, an extension on the lower end of each flap 5 is secured by a snap-fastener to the flap 7.
The easel is made preferably of such height that it can retain books of difierent heights showing the cover folded, the book being omitment the support is opened to support a book form a rigid lock, which will prevent the book cover being folded when the support is in its open position. This is very essential, as it is book cover can be folded 1n eithei---opene I- provide a spring of any suitable retaining flaps 5 are hinged at v6.to the upper allowing the leaves to provide the position shown in Fig. 6 or can be folded I i 7 are hinged at 8 to the lower portion of the he cover can be closed as in Fig. 6. By makit can be readily opened and closed on its hinges, but the mo- 5 a as in Fig. l, the hinge portions of the support are out of linewith those of the cover and of the sup portm section when the easel ook cover is sha e, which is under tension when the cover is c osed, and when the cover is opened it will immediately force the supporting section away from the body of the cover and retain it in the open position. The spring may be a flat spring as shown in Fig. 4, or 1t may be a coil spring, one end being attached to the body portion and the other end attached to the support.
While the main object of my invention is to provide a support which will act as a cover for a book to which it is attached, it will be understood that in some instances the support may be used for holding or carrying other objects, the body portion being capable of being folded when fiat, when the easel section is in the closed position, but when the easel section is extended, it will not only support the body portion but will lock the sections of the body in the open position.
I claim 1. The combination in an easel support, of a body portion havin a center longitudinal hinge and an ease section transversely hinged to the body portion on a line crossing the longitudinal hinge line of the body portion, so that when the easel section is extended it will lock the body portion in the open position.
2. The combination in an easel support,
of a body portion open at the center and having longitudinal hinged sections and an easel section also having hinged sections in line with the body portion when the body portion is closed, said easel section being transversely hinged to the body ortion on aline crossingthe hinged line 0 the body portion, the
easel section locking the hinged sections of the body when in the open position.
3. The combination in an easel support, of a body portion having side sections; two narrow longitudinal sections, one on each side of the center, said sections being connected together by a hinged strip and connected to the side sections b hinges; and an easel sectiontransversely hinged to the body portion on a line crossing the hinged line of the main portion, said easel section having hinged sections corresponding with those of the body portion, said hinged section locking the body portion when said section'is extended and the body portion is in the open position.
4. The combination in an easel support, of a body portion having an opening at the center; a transversely hinged easel section 10- cated within the opening of the body portion.
said body portion and the hinged easel section each having a longitudinal hinge, the hinge of the easel section being in line with the hinge of the body portion when closed, said longitudinal hinge being on a line crossing the inge line of the hinged section, the hinged section being locked in position when the body portionis folded.
