UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
CHARLES C. SHEPHERD, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEM ENT IN SCHOOL-SLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,464, dated July 24, 1877; application filed November 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GHARLEs G. SHEPHERD, of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in School-Slates, of which the following is a specification:
In Letters Patent No. 165,126, granted to me, a slate is placed upon a frame so as to stand at an inclination like a desk.
My present invention is an improvement upon the same; and consists in an ordinary school-slate with au inclined copy-holder at one side, which receives the ends of the pattern or copy-slip, so as to hold it in the proper position, and I support this slate upon a deskframe in an inclined position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the slate and desk, and Fig. 2 is aplan of the slate with the copy-slip partly removed to show the slate-frame.
The slate a is Within the frame b, and these` are of any usual character. They are shown as rounded at the corners. n
The copy-slip holder is composed of the two end-pieces e e, with inclined channels in their opposite faces, so that the ends of the copyslip fcan be passed into these channels to hold the copyslip in the inclined position desirable While the same is being copied upon the slate.
The desk portion h is similar to a shallow box, with the upper edges inclined to support the slate-frame b in an inclined position. This frame b is hinged, at l, to the desk h, so that it can be lifted like a desk-flap, and Within the desk there is a partition, o, to separate the receptacle for the copy-slips f, and there will generally be a pencil, 1, ruler s, and wiper t introduced Within the desk.
The hinges-l are located at the edge of the slate-frame, so that it can be turned over, and to give access to the under side. The desk portion supports one side of the slate-frame, so that itis inclined, which is a great couvenience to the scholar.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the slate and frame, of the inclined pieces e, With channels in the opposite faces for the reception of the copy-slips, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with an ordinary opaque slate and its frame, of an inclined desk and hinges, substantially as set forth, so that either surface of the said slate can be made use ot' while in an inclined position, as set forth.
Signed by me this 13th day of November, A. D. 1876.
OHAS. C. SHEPHERD.
