Description

O. O. SHEPHERD.
Slate.
No. 205,582. Patented July' 2, 18781.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. SHEPHERD, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'SLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,582, dated July 2, 1878; application filed May 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OHARLEs O. SHEPHERD, of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Drawing and Writing Slates, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent No. 165,126 were granted to me. In my said patent the box that holds the copy-slips serves as a support for the slate in an inclined position.
In my present slate the box serves as a support, the same as in my said patent, but the slate extends across the top of the box, and there aretinclined copy-slip holders at each side ot' the'slate-frame, with grooves in their opposite faces to hold the copy-slip, as in Letters Patent No. 193,464, granted to me.
Mypresent improvement relates to combinin g, with the slate and its support, a sliding drawer for the copy-slips, that may be pulled out for removing the copies from their inclosure sufficiently to give free access to all of them for selecting the particular slip required as a copy in drawing or writing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section transversely of the copy-slips, and Fig. 2 is a section longitudinally of the same.
The slate a, frame I), and copy-slip holders 0 c are similar to those shown in my aforesaid Patent No. 193,464, andthe slate is supported in an inclined position by the box or frame that holds the copy-slips, similarly to those in my Patent No. 165,126.
The support or frame is made with the sides e e, that are grooved near their lower edges, in which the copy-slip drawer slides.
This is composed of the bottom piece f, front piece 9, and inner end piece h. This drawer can be pulled out more or less while the slate is in use, and. the copy-slips selected as required or replaced. This gives great convenience to the pupil, because the slate does not have to be turned over or moved when selecting the copy-slips in succession, and hence the writing or drawings on the slate are not liable to be injured.
When not in use, the copy-slips are replaced in their inclosure by pushing the drawer back into place.
It is preferable to employ a drawer with only bottom and end pieces, as shown, as side pieces, it added to the drawer, would interfere with the handling of the copy-slips; but if the drawer is made with side pieces, it is not necessary that the parts 6 0 attached to the slateframe extend down to the bottom of the drawer, as such drawer can slide between such parts 0 e.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the slate a I), provided with the side pieces a, of the drawer for the copy-slips, consisting of the front 9, end h, and bottom f, and arranged to slide endwise between the pieces a, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of May, A. D.
CHAS. O. SHEPHERD. Witnesses:
