To (all cola 0m '1' i may concern .Be it known that I, Cimmlns (fx. Quacunnnosir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bookcases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in knock down sectional book cases and other analogous structures and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

One object of the invention is to etl'ect improven'lents in the construction of the walls and back of the case or other structure, whereby the said parts are adapted to be readily detached or assembled, without the necessity of en'iploying implements or tools of any kind, and whereby the back is utilized for locking the other parts of the structure together.

Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for hanging the door of the case so as to permit the door to be swung to either an open or a closed position and to also permit the door to be run in out of the way under the top or upper wall of the case, the door hanging means being disposed entirely out of the way and being so arranged and constructed as to prevent the door from binding.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of one end portion of a knock down sectional hook case constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a---a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line b& of Fig. 1, showing the door in vertical, closed position. Fig. t is a similar view of the same on the plane indicated by the line c--c of Fig. 1, showing the door in open elevated position in full lines and run in, out of the way, under the top wall or shelf of the case in dotted lines.

For the purposes of this specification, the bottom shelf, wall or member of the book ease or other analogous structure is shown at 1, the top wall or shelf at 2, one of the end walls at 3 and the back at 4t.

to its rear sides thereof, and are inclined and arranged in converging relation. The bot.- tom and top walls or members oi. the case are provided. respectively, on their upper and lower sides, near their ends, with looking channel plates (3 which have converging walls 7 to engage the said grooves 5. These channel plates are secured to the bottom and top members oi the case by screws or other suitable means and their inclined walls coact with the grooves oi the end members to detachably secure the top, bottom and end members together and prevent them from being separated excepting by sliding the top and bottom members longitudinally of the said end members, as will be understood.

The grooves 5 and the locking cnanncl plates terminate short of the front sides ()1? the top, bottom and end members so that. they are spaced from the t'ront; oi the case. The said locking channel plates also terminate short of the rear sides of said case members. The top and bottom members of the case are recessed on their rear sides as at 8 and the end members are provided on their opposing sides, near their rear edges, with vertical groves t) which are coincident with the recessed portions of the top and bottom members and which serve to receive the ends of the back 4t. The back when in place in the said end grooves bears against the rear sides of the top and bottom members, and, hence, locks the latter to the end members against sliding movement thus preventing the case :From being disassembled until after the back has been removed. To hold the back in place and against sliding in the grooves, the top and bottom members of the case are provided with headed studs 12 which project therefrom and engage notches in the upper and lower sides of the back.

The top wall or member 2 of the case is provided on its under side, at points near its ends, with transverse grooves 13 which extend from its rear side nearly to but short of its front side. or edge. .iuidi'ng and supporting bars 1 1: are arranged in these grooves each having its front; end secured to the under side of the top wall as at; 15 and its rear endv upturned and secured to the rear side ot the top wall as at; 16. These guiding and sup iorting bars are o'l less cross sectional dimensions than the grooves and are arranged centrally with respect to the grooves so that they are out of contact with the sides of the grooves and so that their lower sides are in a common plane with the lower surface of the top member or wall.

The door 17 may be of any suitable construction and is provided at its upper side, near its ends, with hinges 18 each of which comprises a leaf 19 which is secured directly to the upper edge or side of the door and a leaf 2O pivotally connected to the leaf 19 and which forms a slide or hanger me1nber. The slides or hanger members are arranged under the guiding and supporting bars for sliding movement with respect thereto and are provided on their upper sides with peripherally grooved rollers 21 which are mounted on axle studs 22 with which the slides are provided. These peripherally grooved rollers extend into the grooves of the top wall or member 2 of the case and their grooved peripheries engage opposite side edges of the guiding and supporting bars so that the slides are connected to the guiding and supporting bars for longitudinal movement.

The hinges permit the door to be turned to a closed vertical position or raised to a horizontal open position and also permit the door after it has been raised to a horizontal posit-ion, to be run in, out of the way, under the top wall, shelf, or member 2 of the case by reason of the sliding connection between the slide members of the hinges and the guiding and supporting bars, as will be un: derstood.

The end walls of the case are provided 011 their opposing sides near their front edges, with guiding and supporting and stop rollers 28 which may be made of rubber or any other suitable material and are mounted for rotation on suitable axle studs 24:. These rollers 23 bear under the lower side of the door and support the latter when in raised and retracted position and are spaced a sufficient distance from the front edges of the end walls of the case to permit the door after it has been moved forwardly to its rear ends of the guiding and supporting bars are provided with notches 25 in their sides to clear the rollers on the slide members of the hinges and, hence, after the top, bottom and end members of the case have been detached from one another, the door may be readily and entirely disconnected from the top member by merely pushing the latter rearwardly so as to cause the rollers of the slides to entirely disengage the guiding and supporting bars.

While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of myinvention, I would have it understood that changes may be made inv the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim.

I claim In a structure of the class described, a wall having a transverse gi'om'e in one side closed at its front end and open at its rear end, a guiding and supporting bar arranged longitudinally of the groove, spaced from the sides thereof and secured at its ends to said wall, that portion of the said bar which is secured to the rear side of the wall being upturned and notched, a slide on the outer side of the bar having means to slidably secure the same to the bar, said securing means extending into and being cleared by the groove and being also cleared by the notched upturned rear portion of the supporting bar when the slide is at the rear end of the groove, and a door pivotally connected to and movable with the slide.
