JAMEs ADELBERT FULLER, Von NEW YORK, N. Y;
BOX OR CAS E.
SPECIFICATICN forming part of Letters Patent N0. 621,059, dated March 14, 1899.
' Application iled Octoher'22, 1898. Serial No. 694,253. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ADELBERT FUL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Cases, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.A
This invention relates to sliding and folding doors; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is applicable to boxes,cases,wardrobes,cu pboards, and other and similar articles of furniture and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with boxes or cases for use in filing and storing papers, documents, and other articles of all kinds and classes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the foling drawings form a part, in which;
Figure 1 is a front View of a box or case made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section on the line2 2of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a view similar` to Fig. 2, showing the parts in a different position; Fig. 4, a sectional plan view of one corner of the box or case, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of construction; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5; and Figs. 7and S show my improvement applied to an ordinary wardrobe, Fig. 7 bein ga front view with part of the construction in section and Fig. 8 a transverse section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7. In the drawings forming part of this specificationthe separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I have shown my improvement applied to a box or case which is preferably oblong and rectangular in form and which comprises ends 7, a top 8, a bottom 9, a back 10, and the front of which is open and adapted to be closed by ahinged and movable plate l1. Secured to the inner sides of the ends 7 and at a suitable distance below the top 8 are cleats or strips 12, and mounted between said cleats or strips 12 and the top 8 is a narrow sliding plate 13, which is substantially of the same thickness as the space between said cleats or strips and the top plate, and the movable plate 11 is hinged to the plate 13, as shown at 14..
The ends of the box, at the front thereof, are also provided with vertical strips 15, and the upper ends of said strips 15 prevent the plate 13 from being drawn out at the front of the `box or casing, this construction being clearly shown in Fig. 4., and said plate 13 is provided at its front corners with angular notches or recesses 16, which receive the strips 15 and whereby the front edge of the plate 13 may be drawn out flush with the front surface of the strips l5, as is also clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The front edge of the plate 13 and the ad; jacent edge of the plate 11 are beveled at their hinged connection at 14, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and by means of this construction'the plate 1l may be slid back wardly beneath the cover 8, as shown in Fig. 3, or drawn out and allowed to hang in the position shown in Fig. 2 in which position it closes the front of the box or case.
The plate 11 is provided centrally of its and by reason of this fact and the method in which the plates 11 and 13 are connected a narrow space 19 is formed between the plate 11 and the top 8 of the box or case, the object of this construction being to prevent the upper surface of the plate 11 from being scratched or injured by being shoved into and drawn out of said space.
This box or case is simple in construction and operation and may be used for a variety of purposes, and all that is necessary toV open the entire front thereof is to raise the plate 11 and push it back into the space between the cleats or strips 12 of the top 8 of the box or case, as shown in Fig.. 3, and when it is desired to close the front of the box or case the said plate 11 is drawn out and allowed to hang vertically, as shown in Fig. 2.
IOO
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modifica'- tion inwhich the top 8 is made thicker than in the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, and said top is provided with a longitudinally-slidable central portion 20, the sides of Which are connected With the top 8 by a tongue-and-groove joint, as shown at 21, and Whenthe plate 11 is drawn out into the position shown in Fig. 6 and closes the front of the box or case the portion 2O of the top may be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 5, thus providing access to the box or case through the top thereof.
In Figs. 7and SAI have shown myimprovement applied to a Wardrobe 22, which is provided at each side and at the top and bottom with transverse cleats. or strips 23, which are similar to the cleats or strips 12, which serve the same purpose in Fig. 1, and between said cleats or strips and the sides 26 of the Wardrobe are mounted the slides 13, to which the doors 1l are hinged. The Wardrobe is open in front, and the doors 11 are adapted to be swung outwardly and moved backwardly into the spaces between the sides of the Wardrobe and the cleats or strips 23, as shown at the right of Fig. 8, and when drawn out and closed the front of the Wardrobe appears of the usual form and construction, as clearly shown in Fig. 7.
It will be apparent that my improvement maybe applied to other forms of construction and that boxes or cases constructed as shown in Figs. 1 wto 3 may be mounted in a casing in the manner of drawers, and many other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A box or case comprising a top, bottom a back and end pieces, saidrbox or case being open at the front, a slide mounted in the top of said box or case, a plate hinged to said slide and adapted when said slide is drawn out to close the open front, and means for preventing the slide-front being detached from the box or case, said box or case being also provided with a slidable section in the top thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. A box or case, comprising top, bottom, back and end pieces, said box being open at the front, said end pieces being provided in the upper inner portions thereof with cleats,
`or strips, a slide mounted upon said cleats or strips, devices to determine the limit of moves ment of said slide, and a door hinged to the forward end of said slide and adapted to hang down over the open front of said box, substantially as shown and described.
3. A box or casing, comprising bottom, iop, back and end pieces, said box being open at the front, strips or cleats secured to the inner upper portion of the ends of said box, a slide mounted upon said cleats, vertical cleats secured to the inner sides of said ends to limit the forward movement of said slide, a door hinged to said slide, the hinged edges of said slide and said door being reversely beveled, said door being adapted to hang down and close the open front of said box, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of October, 1898.
JAMES ADELBERT FULLER.
