DESK-SECTION FOR SECTIONAL BOOKGASES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Fnnn W. Toner, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk-Sections for Sectional Bookcases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in desk sections for sectional bookcases and its object is to provide an improved section having a lid. or front arranged in a novel manner whereby the said section may be mounted and used on an ordinary t-welveinch section of a bookcase.

Heretofore desk sections have been made to combine with sectional bookcases, but when the front is hinged at the bottom of the desk section as usual it is too low when opened out if mounted on a twelve-inch book section, which is the most appropriate size for use as the lower section of sectional bookcases and if mounted on two sections of such a. bookcase the said sections are necessarily too high to bring the desk lid a suitable dis' tance from the floor.

The main feature of my device is in a desk section provided with a lid or front so supported and pivoted that when opened out it is in a plane substantially opposite the middle of the desk section, and thus is about the right distance from the floor when the said section is mounted upon an ordinary twelveinch bookcase section with an ordinary base beneath the same.

.iinotlier object is to provide the device with suitable means for pivotally supporting the said front and securely holding the same in open position, also to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

1 represents an ordinary base of a column of sectional bookcases. 2 an ordinary lower section of a sectional bookcase which is usually one of the larger sizes or about a twelveinch section.

3 is an upper section of a sectional bookcase as ordinarily constructed, surmounted by the usual cap section.

4.- is a desk section embodying my invention. This section adapted to be mounted between two ordinary sections of a sectional bookcase and is provided substantially at the middle with a horizontal partition or Iloor 5 provided with a rabbeted edge to engage the rabbeted rear edge of the lid or cover (3 adapted when closed to close the front of the bookcasesection and when opened to extend outward in the same horizontal plane with the partition 5. At each side of this lid or cover is a supporting rod 7 pivoted at its upper end to the upper front part of the end of the section and extending thence downward and outward is pivoted to the end of the lid 6 intermediate its front and rear edges. Coacting with these supporting rods are pins 8 oppositely projecting from the cover 6 near its inner or lower corners which pins engage and traverse grooves 9 in the inner sides of the ends of the section. These grooves extend from the bottom of the ends parallel with and close to the front edge thereof to opposite the edge of the partition 5 and thence curve inward and rearward as at 9. The inclined position of the supporting rods 7 thus forces the pins backward and securely engage the same with the inwardly inclined portions of the slots and prevent the rear edge of the lid from becoming disengaged from the partition or descending until the lid is manually pulled forward. The pins will then run down the grooves 9 freely and the lid be readily turned to closed position. I prefer also to incline the front edges of the ends of the desk section making them broader near the bottom and extending the bottom strip outward to correspond whereby the lid falls inward at the top and remains securely closed by g 'avity. tion door may swing in the usual manner. It also has a rear bottom strip 11 corresponding to the bottom strip on a book section and a top strip 12 corresponding to the top strip of the same whereby this desk section may be interposed between any two ordinary book sections and will interlock therewith in the usual manner of such sections with each other. Along the upper front corner of the desk section is extended a convex strip 13 to fit the concavity in the front bottom strip of a book section against which strip 13 the rabbeted front edge of the lid 6 closes and forms a suitable joint.

WVhat I claim is 1. A desk section for sectional book cases, comprising a desk section adapted to be used in connection with book case sections and provided with opposite grooves, one groove in each end, a horizontal partition in the section near the middle thereof, the upper ends of said grooves terminating adjacent the outer edge of said partition, a front or lid having pins near the lower inner corners which traverse said grooves, and supporting rods for the front or lid connected at their ends on fixed pivots to the lid and to the front part of the ends of the desk section above said partition whereby said lid may be slipped upwardly at its bottom and swung outwardly and down-- wardly at its top to the Plane of said partition and supported in such position.

2. A desk section for book cases comprising a desk section, a horizontal partition near the middle of the section, a front or lid for the section adapted to swing to the same horizontal position as the partition with its inner edge overlapping the outer edge of the partition.

3. A desk section for book cases comprising a desk section adapted to be used in connection with book case sections and having forwardly projecting ends at its front, the forwardly projecting ends having grooves near the outer edges thereof, which grooves extend inwardly at their upper ends, a horizontal partition in the case near the middle thereof, with its front edge terminating short of the outer edges of said projecting end portions of the case and rabbeted on its front under edge, the upper ends of said grooves terminating adjacent the front edge of said partition, a front or lid having pins in its ends adjacent its lower corners which traverse said grooves, the lower edge of the cover or lid being rabbeted on its lower edge, and bars pivoted to the lid or cover and to said section above said partition whereby the pins of the lid or cover may slide upwardly in said grooves and inwardly into the inwardly directed portion of said grooves and the lid or cover swung outwardly to a horizontal position midway of the top and bottom of the section and supported in such position with the afore said rabbeted edges of the lid or cover and partition in overlapping relation.
