NESTOR LATTARD, O
F NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROUND EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,21Q, dated March 5, 1895.
Serial No. 522,475- (lTo model.)
To all whom 2325 may concern.-
Be it known that I, NESTOR LATTARD, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Round Extension-Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to round tables for dining rooms and other purposes, and the object of the invention is to provide a round table capable of being extended as to its diameter by providing segmental extension leaves and suitable legged supports therefor, so constructed and arranged as to provide a strong and stable structure, that may be The invention provides for a small or a larger increase in thediameter of the table by the addition of one or more circular series of segmental extension pieces, and also for a convenient storage compartment in the table for the extension pieces.
The invention will be explained in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointedout in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a round table constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, parts being broken away and others being in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the table with one circular series of extension segments added, parts of the table being broken away and others shown in section. Fig. 4 is aview similar to Fig. 3 and showing a second circular series of extension pieces in place; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the table arranged substantially as in Fig. 4.
In constructinga table in accordance with my invention a fixed preferably rectangular frame A is provided which is supported by fixed legs 13, such legs and the frame also in the main being of ordinary construction, and on the frame thus provided a round table top 0 is fixedly secured in any approved manner, the structure thus described forming in practice a small round table, as in Figs. 1 and 2. In connection with this table I provide for the support of one or more circular series of extension leaves or segments as follows: To the frame 0 or to the fixed legs B, are secured folding brackets D preferably one at each corner, the term folding being employed to indicate that the brackets are capable of being moved inward into close relation to the fixed structure, or moved outward when an extension or enlargement of the table is to be effected, and in the present instance these brackets are shown hinged as at d, though it is evident they may be slidable if desired. Each bracket is provided at its outer end with aleg E and when extended to the position indicated in Fig. 3 for instance, these legged brackets are adapted to properly sustain a circular series of sections or segments F. In order to secure the sections F to the fixed table top 0 and to each other, the inner edge of each section is caused to engage the edge of the top 0 by forming suitable mortises c in the table and corresponding tenons f on the segments, preferably two tenons for each segment, and each side edge of each segment F is formed with a tongue f or groove f to engage corresponding grooves and tongues on the juxtaposed side edges of the adjacent segments. Thus the segments, corresponding at their inner edges with the curvature of the permanent top, and being held to such top and to each other, and supported by the legged brackets, form a practically integral part of the table when in place, and afford a ready means for conveniently enlarging the table as desired, thereby forming a most desirable article for both public and private dining rooms and for similar purposes.
In practice I prefer further to provide a second circular series of segments F, to properly support which there are secured to each of the folding brackets D, a second bracket D so supported from or connected with the first named brackets as to be moved outward there-beyond when desired, to form practicably a continuation of such brackets D, and in the instance shown the connection is effected by a butt hinge as at d. W'hen it is desired to adjust the second series of segments in place to further enlarge the table, the
brackets D' are brought outward from the positions shown in Fig. 3 to the positions shown in Fig. 4, and the outer segments F secured in position as in Figs. 4 and 5, it being understood that the said additional segments are secured to the inner series by a tenon and mortise connection and to the side edges of each other by tongue and groove, and further as will be seen from the drawings the two series are made to break joint. By the arrangement described the brackets of both series of segments are supported from a single series of legs E which are common to both.
To provide for convenient storage of the extension sections, a box-like structure is supported from the permanent table and consists of sides a, a, a back 1), bottom a and a hinged front 6, a central partition 9 serving to provide separate compartments for the two series of sections and also to add strength to the parts. In addition the central part 0 of the permanent table top is formed into a cover for the storage compartments, being secured by'hinges c and provided with a suitable lifting device 0 Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein described table, comprising a permanent flat-topped round table, havi-ng a'boX-like structure supported from the'table at the under side of its top, said top having a removable portion forming a cover for the box, and movable sections adapted to 'be $6- cured to the table, substantially as described.
'forth.
3. The combination of a permanent table, having a circular top, a series of segmental sections having inner edges curved to con- "form to th'e'edges of the circular top and outer edges"concentricthereto, said sections adapted to be secured to the edges of said round top so as -to increasethe diameter thereof, and a second series of segmental sections having theirinner edgescurved to "conform to and adapted to be 'securedto the edges of the first na'inedsegments to still further increase the diameterofthe top,the en'ds of'the segments in therespective series beingarranged to break-joint,substantially as set forth.
