N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VINFIELD SVROLLINGS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
FOLDING OR EXTENSION TABLE.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,077, dated October 9, l894 Application filed April 21, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. ROLLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or Extension Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exaotdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in I folding or extension tables, more especially for hotels and inns for exhibiting samples of goods on by commercial or traveling agents, combining. certain facilities and. advantages in the use of the samewhich will be apparentfurther on, and to these ends the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and specially pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a view of my invention, showing it folded, Fig. 2 is a View thereof, showing it unfolded or extended. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same unfolded or extended. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections taken through different portions thereof. Fig. 6 is a modification, showing aoontinuous canvas or flexible table top and skeleton-support therefor, Fig. '7 is a sectional elevation thereof with the parts assembled. v
In carrying outmy invention, I provide a relatively stationary table section A, having at one side, relatively its rear side, an upward extension a; and into a frame a upon said extension is secured a mirror 17, facing toward the table, and to one side of said-extension is v hinged a side section a which, when standing at right angles to said extension or folded, abuts against the same and is in alignment with one side of said table section.
Opposite to the side section 0 is a drop side section 0, being pivoted or hinged to drop downward and, in its lower or extended position, to rest flush with the top of the tablesection A, it being supported, however, in this position by slides or bars d sliding through openings in the side of the table-section and suitably incased, as at 01'', under the top of Serial No. 508,423. (No model.)
I the table-section. These slides are suitably shaped or formed at their projecting or outer ends as at d to permit them to be conveniently graspediand withdrawn when desired for the purpose aforesaid. At right angles to these side sections 0 c, is a third side-secs tion 0 having at its bottom edge or end inset hookse adapted to engage either of two'sets of staples e, or e? on the table-section A ac- 6o cording as it is in an upright,or in a horizontal, position, as shown. When in its horizontal or lowered position, the side-section c is supported about flush with the top of the table-section' A by means of folding legs f apo5 plied to said side-section, near its normally upper end. These side-sections c c, c are hooked together when standing edge to edge as shown by hooks and catches g g.
0 ,0 0 are leaves or table top sections, which may, of course, be increased in number, according to the-quantity of goods or samples it may be desired to exhibit or display, theseleaves orsections, when assembled in connection with the relatively stationary table-section as shown, forming an extension table or counter for the goods or samples to rest on. These leaves or table top-sections are provided with foldinglegsh for theirsupport when in use, and the leaves 0 c andthe 8o convertible side-section e have interconnecting notched projections i, and pins 71 to provide for the assembling of the same, as shown, as an extension-table or counter. The tabletop section a is adapted for application to, and as an extension of, the opposite'side of the table-section A, it being cut away as at j to receive and snugly hug the lower end of the side-section c with its inner end resting upon said table-section, flush with the top thereof, as shown. Previous, however, to disposing the side-section c in this'latter position, the hinged side-section c is swung'fully back against the edge of the upward sideextension at of the table-section A and then 5 by moving the side-section o inward, it will be received into the recess formed by cutting away the section 0 as at j, and thus serve to prevent the accidental endwise displacement of the latter section when in its horizontal zoo position.
The table-section A, with its hinged sidesections, when the latter are hooked together, form a convenient receptacle to hold the portable table-top sections or leaves, when not in use.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 6 is a continuous flexible table top A which is adapted to be supported on a suitable skeleton framing or support B. The longitudinal side pieces of said support have headed pins B whereby if desired, either end may be hooked to the notched projections on the table top leaves or sections. The support B has suitable pivoted legs Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the section A having an upward extension at, a side section 0, hinged to the said extension (1, side section hinged to the section A and adapted to swing downwardly, sliding bars adapted to support said section 0 flush with the top of section A, the side section 0 hooks on the lower edge of said section adapted to engage either of two sets of staples on section A whereby to support said section 0 in either an upright or horizontal position, folding legsf, carried by said section 0 and a section 0 adapted to form an extension of the table section .A, said section being cut away near one edge to receive the lower end of section 0, all arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with the section A having an upward extension or, a side section 0, hinged to the said extension, 0,, side section a hinged to the section Aand adapted to swing downwardly, sliding bars adapted to support said section 0' flush with the top of section A, the side section cihooks on the lower edge of i said section 0 adapted to engage either of two 3. The combination of the table sectionhaving the upward extension and the hinged side-section connected to said extension, and the convertible side-section having folding legs and a cut-away portion to receive said hinged side-section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. WINEIELD S. ROLLINGS. \Vitnesses:
