UNlTED STATES ATENT FFICE.
CHARLES W. FULLER, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681 ,366, dated August 27, 1901.
Application filed October 26, 1900. Serial No. 34,460. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. FULLER,Of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massach usetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables,of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains or with which it is most nearly connected to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to extensiontables, and the object is to provide by a simple and practical construction for producing continuity of the depending ornamental skirt when the table is extended. Ordinarily the leaves of an extension-table have no skirt portions, and hence when the table is extended a gap occurs at each side between the skirt portions of the end sections of the table, creating an unsightly appearance. The mere provision of fixed 'skirt portions on the under sides of the leaves to fill such gaps would be objectionable on account of additional space the leaves would require when packed for shipmentorstorage. Myinventiomhowever, removes any such obj ection, the skirt portions being arranged to fold so as to lie flat against the leaves when not in use and also to be held securely in place when fitted to the table in its extended condition.
WVith the above-stated object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements of which are specified in the appended claim, a preferred form of embodiment of the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an extension-table in perspective having my improvements incorporated therein. Fig. 2 represents, on an enlarged scale, one of the leaves in perspective with the skirts thereof positioned as when incorporatedQin the table; and Fig. 3 is afragment'ary perspective view of the leaf inverted, with one of the skirts closed or folded against the leaf.
The reference-letter a designates the end sections of an extension-table,which are provided with the usual skirts b, fixed to and depending from the under sides of the top. The leaves 0 rest upon the usual supportingbars, which slide past each other when the table is extended, and these leaves have the usual dowel pins and holes as have the tops of the said sections. Each leaf is provided on the under side with skirt-pieces d, which are connected with the leaf by means of hinges 6, so that they can either stand at right angles to the leaf or lie fiat against the same. The skirt-pieces are preferably arranged to fold inwardly, the hinges being located on their inner sides, and when turned outwardly the movement of said skirts is limited by their longitudinal edges coming against the under surface of the leaf, as illustrated in Fig. 2. These hinged skirts and the fixed skirts Z) are provided with dowel pins and holes ff, so that they can be fitted together and the hinged skirts thereby properly held in place.
It will be seen that by the above-described construction an extension-table is equipped with means for filling the gaps which ordinarily occur between the skirts of the end sections and providing a continuity of skirt along each side of the table. Furthermore, the presence of the skirt-sections on the leaves does not cause any difficulty as topacking of the leaves for shipment or storage, for the skirt portions will lie flatly against the leaves, requiring very little space. Thus in the ordinary box or case provided for the leaves when not in use the folded skirt-pieces find room in the spaces already caused by the.
strips secured to the end wall of the box forming guideways for the leaves. Thus the object primarily stated is effectively accomplished. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is capable of embodiment in other forms than that here shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is as followsi An extension-table leaf having foldable skirtpieees hinged directly to its under side so as to either lie fiat against the same or stand at an angle thereto with longitudinal edges engaged therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 24th dayof October, A. D. 1900.
CHARLES W. FULLER. Witnesses:
