To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANDREAS M. PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to extension-tables, and has for its object to provide a table of simple and substantial construction which can be extended easily and quickly to greatly increase its size.

With these and other ends in view I have illustrated one manner of embodying the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a bottom plan view of the table extended and with the necessary additional leaves in place. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the table in its smallest size. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views on the lines t 4: and 5 5 of Figs. 2 and 1, respectively.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures, it will be observed that the table is formed in its smallest size by four corresponding corner-sections 6, 7, S, and 9, to which the corner-legs are fastened. Additional legs 11 are fastened to two ofthe sections 6 and 7, and in the smallsize table these legs will be located centrally.

The sections 6 and 7 are connected by a set of slides which comprises a rigid slide 12, fastened by brackets 13 or otherwise to each of the corner-sections and each having a dovetail lengthwise connection with the looselyacting intermediate slide 14:. In the preferred construction of my invention, as illustrated in the drawings, I provide a wedgeshaped tenon 15,extending lengthwise on each side of the intermediate slide 14 and fitted in a corresponding mortise in the slide 12, Fig.

7 The corner-sections S and 9 are connected by a set of slides in the same manner as the sections 6 and 7, and two sets of these slides are employed to connect the sections 6 and 8 and the sections 7 and 9, the outer sets 18 on each side being located in alinement with the legs and the inner sets 19 being located parallel with said outer sets and adjacent to the opposing edges of the sections to which they are fastened. To leave room for the slides which connect sections 6 and 7 and 8 and 9 to operate, I have fastened one end of each of the inner sets of slides which connect sec tions 6 and 8 and 7 and 9 to a brace 20, fastened to sections 7 and S, as shown in Fig. l. The slides 12 of the inner sets 19 are connected at their ends by a support which comprises a slide 21 and a slide 22, which are hinged'to the slides 12. The slide 22 is made in two folding parts hinged together at 23, and the outer part has a tenon 24, which fits the mortise 25, which extends to the end of the slide 21, Fig. 5.

I provide a suitable number of additional leaves which comprise the long leaves 26, preferably made in two parts and hinged together for convenience, and the short leaves 27, all of the leaves being provided in the usual manner with dowels and pins on their adjacent edges.

My improved table is very simple and light in construction, but is nevertheless rigid and substantial when extended to its maximum, and the top thereof will be supported perfectly level. It is entirely free from any loose or complicated parts and can be extended in the ordinary manner by pulling on opposite sides thereof, all the movable parts being arranged to operate without special manipulation. It will readily be observed also that the leaves 26 can be omitted and the table made elliptical in shape and that leaves 26 of different lengths may be provided.

Without limiting myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An extension-table comprising four relatively movable and corresponding sections, a leg for each section located near its outer edge and midway of the ends thereof, two single sets of slides connecting the sections in two pairs, two double sets of slides at right angles to the single sets and connecting the sections in pairs, each of said double sets of slides comprising an outer set in alinement with the legs and an inner set each of which is connected at one end to' said single sets and having its other end terminating at a distance from the opposite single set.

2. An extension-table comprising four corresponding sections adapted to be closed together or separated from each other, a leg for each section, two single sets of slides connecting the sections in tWo pairs, two double sets of slides at right angles to the single sets and each comprising an inner and an outer 15 set, and a support connected to each of said inner sets and comprising a mortised slide and a folding slide, part of which is provided with a tenon operating in said mortise.
