' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON GIARD, 0F ROUGEIVIONT, QUEBEC, CANADA.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
Application filed December 11, 1916. Serial No. 136,123,
0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON GIARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, resid ing at Rougemont, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improve ments in tables and more particularly to an improved. extension table of that class particularly designed or adapted for use for domestic purposes, but nevertheless capable of use in other ways.
An object of the present invention is to generally improve this class of extension tables making the same more practical, strong, durable and efficient in use and in expensive in the cost of manufacture, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.
iVith the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown the simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the table embodying the present invention when being slightly extended;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 1 is a detail enlarged section of the flexible portion of the top of the table.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by simi- Specification of Letters Patent.

lar reference characters throughout the several views.
The table as herein shown comprises the supporting legs 1 which are connected by means of the brace bars 2 and the upper ends of the legs are connected in pairs by means of the transverse bars 3 having connected to their outer ends the sides tof the table, and connecting the medial portions of the sides of the table is a fixed top board 5. The transverse bars 3 are rigidly connected by means of a pair of longitudinally extending brace bars 6. The table top comprises two sections indicated by the numeral 7 and 8 respectively and each section comprises an inflexible leaf portion 9 and a flexible or rolled top portion 10 whichhas .One endconnected to the inflexible portion. Each section is also provided with a depending end portion 11 which is adapted to lie flush with theopposite ends of the side depending portions e't when the table has not been extended. Rigidly connected to the section 7 of the table top is one end of a pair of bars 12 which are connected by means of the transverse cross pieces 13. These bars 12 are provided with laterally projecting ribs 14 which are adapted to rest Within the grooves formed within the inner faces of the bars 6, and the free end of these bars 12 are connected as at 15 to the free ends of the flexible portions of the section 8 of the table top. Also secured to the section 8 of the table top is one end of a'pair of bars 16 which are provided with the laterally projecting tongues 17 adapted to travel within grooves formed within the outer faces of the bars 6. The medial portion of these bars 16 are connected by means of a transverse plate 18 and their opposite ends are connected to the flexible top portion 10 of the section 7 as at 19. The flexible portions 10 of each section of the table top are adapted to travel within the guide ways 20 formed within the depending side portions 4 of the table top. Carried by the depending end portions 11 of the top are the brace bars 21 each having a groove formed within one face thereof for receiving the tongue or rib 22 projecting inwardly from the side portions 4 of the table top. The flexible portion of the table top comprises a plurality of slides 23 which are connected by means of a canvas web 24:, as better shown in Fig. 4c of the drawings. 1
From the foregoing-it is obvious that the table may be adjusted or extended to the desired position and when opening or closing one section ofthetable top likewise the other section will move jointly therewith, due to the fact that the bars 12 and 16 have one end connected to the inflexible portion of one section and theiropposite ends con nected to the flexible portion of the opposite section of the table top. It is also to be noted that the liexible portion of the sections of the table top pass over the rollers 25 so that the flexible portion will travel within the top of the table and will not extend downwardly or otherwise take up any room below the top of the table and give to the table the appearance of an ordinary non-extending table.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An extension table comprising supporting legs, transverse bars connecting said legs, longitudinally extending brace bars rigidly connected to said transverse bars, slidable bars arranged at each side of said longitudinal brace bars and connected therewith, transverse plates one of which jointly connects the slidable bars at the outer sides of said longitudinal brace bars and one connecting the slidablebars at the inner sides of said longitudinal brace'bars, side members supported upon said transverse bars, a top cornprising two movable sections supported upon and connected to said side meml,
bers, said top sections each comprising a flexible portion and an inflexible portion, the outer ends of the slidable bars arranged .at the outer sides of said longitudinal brace ends of said last mentioned pair of slidable bars being connected to the flexible portion of the other section of the top having its inflexible portion connected to the outer ends of the slidable bars arranged at the outer sides of said longitudinal brace bars substanti'ally as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
