Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STACY C. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistee, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in collapsible tables, the object of the invention being to so construct the table that it may be readily collapsed, and so that the table top will constitute a box or closure for receiving and storing the other parts of the collapsed structure.

A further object is to so construct a collapsible table that it can be easily and quickly assembled and so that it can be readily stored in compact form.

l/Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the box top, and Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detail views.

1 represents a base comprising horizontally disposed legs 2 which are provided centrally with notches 3 to permit the supporting legs to be interlocked when they are disposed at right angles to each other, and each supporting leg is provided at its respective ends with depending portions, 4.

The base 1 supports a pedestal 5, the lower portion of which is provided with slots 7 and said slots are made to communicate with each other. The pedestal is placed on the center of the base 1 so that the legs thereof will enter the slots 7 in the base of said pedestal and thus the legs will be tied together by the pedestal and the latter Wlll be eliectually secured to the base without necessity for the use of metallic fastening means.

The pedestal is provided in its upper end with a plurality of notches or slots 8 for facilitating the removable attachment of a table top 9, the latter being so constructed that it can be converted into a box to receive the other parts of the structure for storing the same. The table thus comprises two rectangular members 1010, each having side flanges 11-12 and end flanges 13. The inner side flanges 11 of the two box-members are connected by hinges 1 1, and said flanges 11 are provided centrally between their ends, with notches 15 which aline with each other when the box or table top is open. A removable cross bar or brace 16 extends transversely through the box-members 10 and is provided at its center with a notch 17 for the accommodation of the flanges 11, the notched portion of said bar also entering the alined notches 15 in said flanges 11. The table top may now be placed upon the pedestal, the cross bar or brace 16 entering two alining notches 8 at the upper end of the pedestal and the abutting flanges 11 of the two table top members entering two of the other notches 8 in the top of the pedestal. In order to insure rigidity of the connection between the pedestal and the table top, a plurality of cleats 18 are secured to the top members 10 in position to receive the upper end of the pedestal between them.

It will be observed that when the parts are assembled, the box-like top of the table will be locked in its open position through its attachment to the pedestal and that all the parts will be securely held in place, without the use of metallic fastening means. When various parts of the structure shall have been separated, the legs constituting the base portion; the pedestal and the cross bar or brace may be stored in the box-like top and the latter closed.

The box-like top may be provided with a suitable handle to facilitate transportation.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. In a knock-down table, the combination with a pedestal having transverse slots in its upper end, and means for supporting said pedestal, of a box-like table top comprising two flanged members hinged together, the adjacent flanges of said members having notches, said adjacent flanges adapted to enter the slotted upper end of the pedestal, and a cross bar extending transversely the table top members and having a notch at its center, said cross bar adapted to enter the slotted upper end of the pedestal.

2. In a knock-clown table, the combination notches, a notched cross bar extending transversely of said table top members, said cross bar and adjacent flanges of the table top members adapted to enter the slotted upper 10 end of the pedestal, and cleats secured in the table top members in position t0 prevent lateral displacement of the table top on the pedestal.
