UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTON E. CONVERSE, OF W'INCHENDON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TABLE.
iSPECIFICATION' forming part; of Letters Patent No. 350,578, dated October 12,1886.
Application filed February 3, 1886. Serial No. 190,702. (No model.)
Vand State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The purpose of this invention is to improve the. construction of tables, whereby they may be packed into comparatively small space for transportation and storage.
The invention consists in the construction substantially as hereinafter specified, whereby the removable table-leaves and detachable legs are packed and held within the frame or body ot' the table.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings rcpresents an under side view of an extensiontable with the legs removed, constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents an under side view of the same, having the re` movable leaves or boards inserted within the frame or body of the table for packing, and the legs also placed therein, and one end ot` each in place l'or securing the same in fixed position; Fig. 3, an under side view of the same, withthc leaves and legs in fixed position for transportation, and the body ot' the table closed up into its smallest space for the purpose; Fig. 4, a transverse section in a plane indicated by the line l l, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a side view of one of the removable legs.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, A A represent the iixcd boards ot the tabletop; B B, the removable leaves 'of the saine; C C, the side rails ot the body. or frame; D D, the end rails thereof, and E E the legs.
My invention is most fully applicable to extension -tablcs, including the removable leaves' in packing; but so far as removing and packing the legs are concerned it is applicable to other tables. n
The side rails, C C, of the two ends of the table-frame slide by each other, according to common construction, or the frame is otherwise equivalently constructed so as to be extended or shortened, according to the number of leaves required in the tabletop. For one part of this invention this extension and contraction of the table is made use of for secur-- ing the legs E E within the body, under the top, in fixed position for transportation. For this purpose there are in the inner side of each end rail, D, four holes, da a a, to receive one end each of all the legs, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. The table is extended, as shown in Fig. 2, Vfor placing the legs as well as the removable leaves in place for packing, and then it is contracted in length, as shown in Fig. 3, to bring both ends of each leg into the holes in the end rails, and to bring the inner sides of the said end rails close against the ends of the removable leaves to keep them in fixed position. The removable leaves are of such width that when matched together they, together with the dowel-pins I) b, will just reach between the inner sides ofthe inner side sliding rails, C C, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The legs are shown iu Fig. 2 as having their lower ends already inserted in the holes a a a c of the adjacent end rail.
The legs E E are represented as removably attachable to the table by having screw-thread ed tenons c c on their upper ends, as shown, to be screwed into screw-threaded sockets d d in the lower edges of the end rails, D D; but I do not limit myself to this construction, which serves very well' for toy tables; but for fullg sized tables some other means of attachment may be adopted.
I disclaim a table having removable legs adapted to be placed within the table-frame for packing when detached from the table# body.
I claim as my inventionl. A table constructed with detachable legs E E, and with frame-rails D D, provided with sockets ay a in their inner sides., for the reception of the ends of the legs inV packing, substantially as and for the purpose herein specitied.
2. An extension-table constructed with de-v tachable leaves B B and legs E E, sliding side rails, C C, and end rails, D D, provided with sockets 'a a, for receiving the ends of the detached legs, whereby the detached leaves and legs may be packed and securely held within .the frame, substantially as herein specified.
