EXTE NSION-TABLE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL ARTHUR NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Ange es and State of California,y have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of extension tables in which temporary leaves forming a part thereof are secured thereto, and an object thereof is to provide a table which can be immediately converted into a table of larger size.

Another object is to provide a table in which the extension means carried thereby are hidden from view when the table is in its normal condition.

A further object is to provide a table that is simple and effective in operation, durable and economical in construction and which will answer the purpose of two distinct kinds of tables.

I accomplish these objects by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1.*is a perspective View of my table in its folded position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of my table in its extended position. Fig. 3.-is a perspective View of the table with the divided top in its opened or extended position. Fig. 4.-is an enlarged transverse section of the table in its folded position. Fig. 5.-is a detail pers ective viewvof one of the anchor means for the divided top.

The table preferably -consists of a frame 10 having legs 11 and a shelf 12. Attached to the frame is a top 13 divided into two rectangular sections 14 and 15, each section having an extension arm 16 rigidly secured thereto on the under sidethereof. These arms are pivotally attached to theside rails 17 of the frame, so that when it is desired to enlarge the table the sections 14 and 15 can be swung apart Vto occupy positions parallel to each other (as shown in Fig. 3). The side rails 17 of the frame are set slightly below the frame 10 so that when the top is swung apart the upper edges 19 of the frame 10 will form a stop for the extension arms 16 to limit the further movement of the sections 14 and 15.

Secured to the inner edges of the sections 14 and 15 are headed pins 32 which are adapted when the divided top is swung apart to engage slotted brackets 33 which are secured to the inside faces of the end rails of the frame 10. These anchors prevent any vertical movement of the sections when in their extended positions. On the inner edges of each section 14 and 15 are tongues 20 which are adapted to engage recesses 22 formed on the under face of the inner edge of the sections 14 and 15 and support the foldable leaves when the table is in its extended or o en position.

T e under faces of the foldable leaves are provided with recesses 21 which register with tongues 2() when the foldable leaves are in their extended osition. A pivoted catch 23 having a hand e 23 attached to one of the rails 17 engages a notched recess 24 when the divided top isin its closed position, thereby locking it from accidental displacement. f

Pivotally attached below the divided top i's a pivoted leaf 25 and a foldable pivoted leaf 26, adapted to fill the opening created by the movement of the divided top. Leaf 25 is pivotally attached to one of the rails 17 by means4 of a sliding pivot 27, the purpose of this sliding pivot is to provide room for the withdrawal of leaf 26. After the leaf 25 has been withdrawn leaf 26 is withdrawn and leaf 25 is then pushed toward leaf 26 until the pins 27 enter the sockets 28 on the inner edge of the leaf 25 thus forming with leaf 26 a perfect joint, the pins 27 securing it from vertical movement. Leaf 26 is preferably composed of twosections, a pivoted section ,29 and a hinged section 30. Section 29 has on each end an extension arm 31, which is pivoted to the inside of the end of the frame at one side of the center thereof so as to provide room for its withdrawal.

Secured to one of the rails 17 is a downwardly extending arm 34, the outer end of which is bent inwardly at right angles thereto. and forms a combined rest and sto for the foldable pivoted leaf 26, the hlnged section 30 contacting with the rest and being supported thereby and the outer end of the pivoted section bearing against it. It will thus be observed that the combined weight of sections 29 and 30, to the left of pivoted bar 31, is greater than the weight of section 29 to the right, when the leaves are in the position shown in Fig. 4. The outer end of section 29 will therefore be forced upwardly against stop 34', while the outer end of section 3() is supported by the same sto The operation of the table is as follows:- When it is desired to extend the table, the

Wardly, thus causing the pivoted section 2'9 to revolve on its pivot until the leaf has reached its extended position, the pivoted section 29 occupying the central position of the extended top. Leaf 25 is then pushed toward section 29 (the sliding pivot permitting) until the pins 27 enter the sockets 28 of the leaf 25.

It Will be observed from the foregoing description that I have produced a novel and useful extension table in Which the extension leaves are attached thereto, thus doing away with the necessityT of storing the leaves in places that at times are inaccessible, and at the saine time have provided a table that can be used as an ordinary drawing room or library table When not in use as a dining table.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described, comtions hinged together, pivotally attached to the end rails of said frame7 said foldable leaves adapted to Vlill the opening ereated by the movement of the end leaves.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a frame having end leaves movably attached thereto; a centrally disposed foldable side leaf slidingly pivoted to one of the side rails of said frame; and a centrally disposed foldable leaf comprising two sections hinged together, pivotally attached to the end rails of said frame, said foldable leaves adapted to iill the opening created by the movement of the end leaves.
