FRANCIS CADWALADER HALL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CHAIR. V
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANCIS O. HALL, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide an article of furniture having elements enabling its use as a chair or stool whose height may be adjusted, and as a table, and in the form in which I prefer to embody my invention I use to the extent that it is possible the adjustable chair or stool structure which forms the subject of my Patent No. 1,020,902 of March 19, 1912, and one of the specific objects of my invention is to adapt that structure for use as a part of the table standard or support.
Having in View the general and particular objects stated, my invention consists in the article of furniture constructed substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of an article of furniture embodying my invention arranged for use as a table; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 2, showing the article arranged for use as a stool, when extended to its full height; Fig. 4 a detail bottom view showing the ratchet bar operating mechanism; Fig. 5 a detail view in perspective from the underside showing the table top; and Fig. 6 a detail view in perspective of one of the ratchet bar engaging teeth.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, generally described, comprehends a base'member which is in the form of the ordinary stool having a general form of a frustum of a pyramid, and consisting of a top 10 and four downwardly and outwardly diverging legs 11, and a seatcarrying member consisting of a rectangular box-like frame 12, and a seat 13 attached to the top of the frame, which seat-carrying member is capable of vertical movement through an opening in the base top 10 so that the seat-carrying member may be lowered within the base member so as to be wholly contained therein, with the top of the seat 13 flush with the top 10 of the base so that the general appearance is that of an ordinary stool which may he sat upon or Specification of Letters Patent.

stood upon, and is in a compact form for convenient transportation or handling, in all of which respects the structure is similar to that of my above mentioned patent as well as in the'particular that at each of the four corners of the box-like seat member 12 there is a vertically extending ratchet bar 15 hung on a pivot 16 at the underside of the seat 13. For each of the ratchet bars there is a detent or tooth 17, preferably in the form of a lug on a bracket 18 which is secured to the base top 10, and which is shown in detail in Fig. 6. The ratchet bars are yieldingly pressed outward so that the teeth thereof will engage the detent 17 by means of a pair of inverted U-shaped springs 210 that are at tached to opposite sides of the seat-supporting member 12 so that they have free ends to bear against the ratchet bars. The ratchet bars are connected together in pairs at their lower end by means of a V-shaped rod or bar 19, (see Fig. 1) the extremities of the legs being attached to the respective ratchet bars of a pair, and the two V-shaped rods approach each other at their contracted ends and they are connected together by a loop 20 on the lower end of a vertical rod 21 which a short distance below the seat 13 has a handle forming cross bar 22 accessible through a hand hole 23 in the seat 13, so that by passing the fingers of the hand through the hole one may reach the handle 22 and lifting thereon the lower end of the ratchet bars, by reason of the connection between the rod 21 and the ratchet bars, consisting of the Vshaped rods 19, will be drawn inward and disengaged from the supporting detents so that the seat 13 is free to be lowered if it is in a raised position, such as is shown in full lines on the drawings, this operation being similar to that of the corresponding structure in my patent above referred to. The connection between the operating rod 21 and the ratchet bars operated by the V- shaped rods 19 is different from that of my patent and is superior thereto in that a stiffer support is aflorded for the ratchet bars and yet flexibility in the directions in which it is required, is provided, no other connection between the ratchet bars of a pair at their lower ends being needed than is afforded by the V-shaped rods 19.
The table top attachment consist of two leaves or halves 31 pivoted together by a hinge 32, and to the underside of each half or leaf 31 is pivoted a leg 33 by means of a hinge 330 so that the leg may swing from a collapsed position against the underside of the leaf to a vertical position, as shown in the drawings, the lower ends of the two legs, when in a vertical position, passing through the hand hole 23 and being provided with upper and, lower shoulders 3st to engage the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the stool seat 13, and thereby interlock the table legs with the seat 13 and support the table at the desired level above the seat 13. The legs 33 may swing toward each other sutliciently to enable their shouldered lower ends to pass into the seat hole 23 and whentheyare in proper posi tion therein they are swun sufliciently outward to cause interlocking and supporting engagement between their shoulders and the seat 13, and they are locked in seat-engaging position by a cross bar 35 pivoted by a hinge 3G to one of the legs which may be swung from a position lying against said leg, to one extending at right angles betweenthe two legs, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and thereby prevent the accidental or unintentional disconnection of the legs and the seat 13. A stop shoulder 37 provided on the leg 33 to which the cross bar 35 is not pivoted to limit the swinging movement of the cross bar 35 to a posi tion at right angles to the two open legs 33. The table when applied is securely and rigidly supported, and yet by reason of the hinging of the two leaves 31 to each other and the hinge connection between the legs and the leaves and between the cross bar 35 and one of the logs, the entire table structure when not in use may be folded into a .very compact state, requiring but little room. To facilitate the insertion of the legs into the seat hole 23, the lower ends of the legs are beveled, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It will be evident that I provide a structure, which, with a minimum of parts is capable of use as an adjustable chair or stool and as a table, and when the table top is removed it can be folded compactly so that it requires little space for its accommodation.
It will be evident that my invention may be embodied in structures differing in form and arrangement of parts from that which I illustrate in the drawings, as one embodi' ment of my invention, the table, indeed, being in the nature of an attachment, adapted for use with various other articles of furniture, and the scope of my claims is to be determined in the light of this statement.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is-- v 1. A table attachment comprising two leaves hinged together, a leg hinged to each leaf, the legs having support-engaging shoulders, and a locking bar pivoted to one of the legs and adapted to engage the other leg.-
2. The combination of a support having a hole in its top, a table composed of two leaves hinged together, two legs pivoted to the respective leaves having at their free endsshoulders to interlock with opposite sides of the hole in the support top, and a cross bar hinged to one leg and adapted to engage the other leg.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS CADlVALADER HALL.
