CRADLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,993, dated November 24, 1903.
1 Application filed August 22, 1903. 'Serial No. 170.432. (No model.)
To all whom, t ntay con/cern:
Be it known that I,JOHN BARTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cradle, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionis a combined cradle and bed; and the object of my invention is to provide a cradle with a projecting hood at the head and to provide means whereby without the use of tools or additional parts the said cradle may be converted into a childs bed with rollers thereon.
My invention consists in a cradle having a hinged end and hood at the head which can be swung downward, the end of the cradle forming when in ahorizontal position an eX- tension of the bottom and the hood becoming the head of the bed.
My invention also comprises rollers carried by the ends of the' rockers and adapted to be turned downward and looked in a vertical position.
My invention further comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my cradle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same converted into a bed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the supporting-legs, showing the manner of connecting the rocker and the caster to the same. lFig. 4 is a similar View, the leg being turned to a vertical position. Fig. 5 is a plan view of an end portion of a rocker with the caster in a horizontal or inoperative position.
In constructing my cradle I employ abody A, of wood or metal and of any preferred design. The head end of this body comprises a rectangular frame A', having angled Vertiframes comprise bars or members A5, angled throughout a portion of their length, the lower ends of the angled portions resting when the hood is in its normal position on the upper side bars A6 of the body and acting both as a support| for the hood and as a stop to limit inward swinging movement of the en d frame A.
oted to the end frame and having aplurality of notches therein adapted to iit over the pin AT.
When formed of metal, I prefer to have the corner-pieces B of the body portion angled, and these extend downward below the body portion, forming the supporting-legs. The lower ends B' of these supporting-legs are bent inward and the rocker C, formed of a broad curved plate, is riveted to the inward bent portion B. The end portion of each rocker is reduced in width, being cut out along the inner side, as shown at C2. A plate C3 is carried by each end of each rocker, being interposed between the rocker and the end B, and adjacent the legs B the plates are crimped, and pivot-pins CVL are carried by the crimped portions, the said pins being arranged at a right angle to the rocker and extending into the cut-out portions C2. The supplemental supportinglegs D are each bent upon themselves at their lower ends to form sockets Dl for the shanlcs of the usual caster-brackets carrying the rollers D2. Each of the supplemental legs D is out out or reduced in width in its upper portion, whereby it is adapted to fit into the cut-out portion C2 of the rocker. `Each leg D has secured to it a plate D3, crimped to register with the crimped portion of one of the plates C3, and in the crimped portion of the plate D3 is journaled one end of one of the pivotpins C4. It is obvious, therefore, that the leg D can be swung into alinement with the rocker to which it is pivoted, or it maybe swung downward parallel to the supporting-leg B, forming virtually an eXtension of the saine.
To lock the adjustable supplemental legs D in the desired position, plates E are pivoted to the legs I3 and at their lower ends are curved to form foot portions E. Each plate E has a lug E2 extending from one side and On each side of the body is arranged a pin A7, which is engagedby a catch AS, pivwhich is bent back on the plate, forming a ICO plate D3, and the leg D is swung into operative or vertical position. The plate E is then turned back to its normal position, and the hook formed by the lug E2 engages the upper portion of the leg D and holds it in a vertical position.
To convert the cradle into a childs bed, it is only necessary to lift the catches A8 and swing the end frame A' to a horizontal position, locking it in that position by again engaging the pins A7 With the catches A8. The hood A3 then becomes the head of the bed.
On the forward part of the hood are arranged brackets F, carrying between thema bar F', to which a netting may be secured to protect the child from flies.
It will be obvious that where the rockers and supporting-legs are formed of wood instead of metal many ch anges in minor details would be required in View of the change of material, the bent pieces B' being dispensed lwith and the sockets for the casters being formed in the usual manner. These departures fromthe details of construction shown and described do not, however, effect the merits of my invention or depart from the scope of same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a cradle-body, of apivoted end piece extending vertically above the sides, means for locking said end piece in a vertical position, a framel forming a hood carried by the end piece and extending over the body of the cradle, side members connected to said hood and adapted to rest on the sides of said cradle-bod y when the end piece is in a Vertical position, and means for locking the end piece in a horizontal position, whereby the end piece becomes an extension of the cradle-bottom and the hood becomes the end piece of said extension.
2. The combination with a body portion of a cradle, of the rectangular, pivoted frame A', carrying at one end the frame A3,arran ged at a right angle to the frame A', the said frame A', being adapted when swung intoa vertical position to form an end piece ofthe body portion and when swung in a horizontal position, to form an extension of the bottom of the body portion, the frame A3, being adapted to form a hood when the frame A', is in a vertical position and to form an end piece when the frame A', is in a horizontal position, a pin carried by the body portion, and a catch carried by the frame A', and adapted to engage the pin when the frame A', is in a vertical or horizontal position.
3. A convertible cradle comprising a body portion and rockers, an adjustable end piece adapted to swing downward and extend the length of the body portion, and supplemental rollercarrying legs adapted to form an extension of the rockers and to be swung downward below the rockers into a vertical position.
4. A combined cradle and childs bed comprising abodyportion having supporting-legs, rockers secured to the lower ends of said legs, a swinging frame, pivoted at one end of the body portion and adapted to form an end piece when adjusted in a vertical position and to form an extension of the body portion when adj usted in ahorizontal position, supplemental legs pivoted to the ends of the rockers and adapted to be swung into alinement with said rockers or to be adjusted parallel to the supporting-legs of the body portion, and rollers carried by the supplemental legs.
5. The combination with an extensible cradle of the kind described, rockers carried by said cradle, said rockers being reduced in width adjacent their ends, pivot-pins carried by said reduced portions, adjustable supplemental legs reduced in their upper portions and journaled on said pivot-pins, rollers carried by said supplemental legs, and means for locking the said legs in the desired position.
