CABINET-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23,1913.
Application filed April 25, 1912. Serial No. 693,111.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY GIORDANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Beds; and I do declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements 1n cabinet beds.
The object of the invention is to provide a bed of this character having an improved construction and arrangement of parts and having in its foot section a mirror which may be turned to a position for use from either side of the bed.
, l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear end and foot section of the bed showing the top or cover of the foot section elevated for bringing the mirror thereon into an operative position; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is anenlarged detail perspective view of one side of the mirror supporting mechanism which is arranged on the foot section of the bed; Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View of the assembled parts shown in Fig. 3.
My improved bed comprises a head section 1 and a hollow foot section 2 connected by a mattress supporting section 3 which is in the form of a casing and has arranged therein series of different sized drawers 4 which open from opposite sides of the bed.
The foot section 2 of the bed comprises a lower compartment 26 which may be employed for any purpose but which is especially designed for holding shoes and which is closed by a door 27 hinged at its lower edge to swing downwardly and outwardly from the outer side of the foot section. If desired the door 27 may be provided on its inner side with a series of strap loops 28 to receive and support shoes which, when the door is shut will be inclosed in the compartment. In the foot section 2 above the compartment 27 is an intermediate compartment 29 which may be employed for any purpose but which is especially designed for holding books or periodicals, said compartment opening toward the head of the bed and at a point immediately above the mattress. The compartment 29 is closed by a door 30 arranged to swing downwardly onto the mattress.
In the foot section above the compartment 29 is a compartment 31 which may be divided by partitions 32 to form a series of receptacles to contain handkerchiefs or other articles and in said compartments preferably near the center thereof is arranged a clock 33, the face of which is exposed toward the head of the bed as shown. The compart ment 31 is closed by a cover 34 on one side of which is arranged a mirror 35. The cover 34 is adapted to be engaged with the top of the compartment 31 and to be raised and swung to such positions that the mirror on the reverse side thereof may be used from either side of the bed.
The supporting and holding mechanism for the top or cover 34 comprises a pair of vertically disposed bars 36 to the lower ends of which are secured disks 37 slidably mounted within upright tubular guides 38 carried on angle iron plates 39 secured to the opposite corners of the foot section as shown. The disks 37 revolve freely on pins 36 in the lower ends of the bars 36 so that the disks when moved up and down by the bars will travel in the guides 38 without friction. The bars 36 are slidably supported near the upper end of the foot section by a transversely disposed brace bar or strap 40 arranged across the rear side of the section and the guides 38 and having its right angular ends 40 secured to the ends of the section as shown. The upper ends of the bars 36 have thereon ofi'set apertured lugs 41 to which are pivotally connected the outer ends of a pair of links constituting a tog gle lever 42 the inner ends of which links are offset at 42 and pivotally connected together and to a point 34 at about the center of the outer edge of the narrow frame or cover 34 as shown. Between the ofl'set lugs 41 of the bars 36 and the links 42 are arranged spring washers 43 which provide a frictional engagemcnt between these parts sufiicient to support the cover 34 when raised above the foot section for the purpose of exposing the mirror 35 on one side thereof. When thus elevated and supported above the top of the foot section, the cover may be turned on its pivotal connection with the ends of the links to bring the mirror 35 to a position for use from either side of the bed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is;
1. The combination of an upright box-like structure forming one end of a bed or the like and having upper and lower compartments; of a cover above the upper end of the same and adapted to close the uppermost compartment therein, upright tubular guides mounted .exteriorly upon said structure, a pair of bars slidably mounted in said guides, and links pivotally connected at their outer extremities with the upper ends of said bars and pivotally connected at their innerextremities with said cover, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of an upright box-like structure forming one end of a bed or the like and having upper and lower compartnovae'ze ments; of a cover above the upper end of the same and adapted to close the uppermost compartment therein, upright tubular guides mounted exteriorly upon said structure, a pair of bars slidably mounted in said guides, a brace carried by said box-like structure to hold said bars in position, disks secured to said bars and having a sliding engagement with the guides, and a pair of links connected at their outer extremities with the upper ends of said bars and having their inner extremities overlapping each other and pivoted to each other and to said cover, for the purpose set forth. 1
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
