Be it known that I, ANDY MAGYAR, a sub ject of the King of Hungary, residing'atI lutchinson, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to bed bottoms,'and has for its object to provide a bed bottom of the spring type combined with means for resiliently supporting the ends of the bed bottom whereby a cushioning 'eHect is set up when a bed in which the bottom is employed is occupied.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a resiliently supported bed bottom of the spring type, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, readily set up with respect to the foot and head pieces of the bed, strong, durable, afording a resilent support for the occupant of the bed and inexpensive.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a resiliently supported. spring bed bottom in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bed illustrating the adaptation therewith of a bed bottom in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 -is a detail view of a section of the post with its slot and keeper.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes the head piece oit a bed which head piece includes a pair of posts 2, 3. The foot piece of the bed is indicated by the reference character 4 which foot-piece includes a pair of posts 5, 6. Each of the posts of the foot and head pieces 1, 4, is provided with a bayonet slot 7 in the inner face of the post, the slot being disposed to provide one leg thereof vertically and the other transversely of the post. of the foot and head pieces l, 4 is hollow and arranged therein is a vertically disposed coiled spring 8, which "is of less lengththan the vertical leg ofthe slot 7. The spring 8 is supported at its bottom' in any-suitable manner within the post `and provides `resilient supports for the bed bottom'fto `belpresently referred to. The horizontal leg` of the slot 7 provides `means topermit ofthe `ends ofthe-bed bottom extending into the post.

Secured to the inner face of each of the Dosts of the head and foot pieces 1 and 4 by the holdfast devices 9 is a vertically disposed retaining member 10, which has its lower end formed with a right angularly disposed lug 11, which extends into the horizontal leg of the slot 7, and said lugs 11 constitute means to prevent the ends of the bed bottom slipping out of the slots 7.

The head and foot pieces are connected together by side rails 12 in the known manner and each of the posts of the head and foot pieces is provided with casters 13. The bed bottom is formed from a frame consisting of a pair of

14 and 15 indicated at 19, project into the slot 7 and are seated upon the tops of the springs 8 whereby the frame is resiliently supported.

Extending transversely of the frame of the bed bottom, centrally of said frame and vabove and below the same are

flat plates

20 and 21 the length of said plates being less than the width of the frame. Interposed between said plates 2() and 21, as well as being connected thereto, is a series of vertically disposed coiled springs 22. The plate 21 is connected to the horizontal flanges of the

end bars

16 and 17, by oppositely disposed elongated coiled springs 23 and each of said springs extending from an end bar inwardly and downwardly at an inclination. Connected to the upper edge of the vertical flanges of the

end bars

16 and 17 is a series of inwardly projecting coiled springs 24, which series is connected to a metallic latticed body 25, and the latter is coupled with the plate 20 by links 26.

- Projecting inwardly from the vertical flange of each of the end bars at each end thereof,v is an inwardly extending elongated coiled spring 26a and the springs 26a of one end bar are connected to the springs 26a of the other end bar by chains 27. The chains 27 are coupled with the ends of the plate 2O by links 28.

The springs 22 maintain the plate 2O and the latticed body 25 above the frame of the bed bottom and said springs 22 form a resilient support when the bed bottom is occuied. p What I Claim The combination with the foot and head posts of a bed, each of said posts being hollow and having its inner face provided with an inverted L-shaped slot, and resilient supporting members within said posts, of a resilient bed bottom comprising a frame having side rails provided with reduced end portions, said portions extending through the vertical legs of said slots and seated upon said resilient supports whereby said bed bottom is resiliently supported, and retaining members carried by said posts and provided with lugs extending in the short horizontal legs of said L-shaped slots for maintaining the extended portions of said frame in said posts.
