.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,196, dated August 15, 1893. Application filed February 7,1893. Serial No. 461,401. (No model.)

.I Se it known that I, ALBERT D. COOKE, a citlzen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to bedsteads adapted for the reception of woven-wire or spring-bottoms; and it relates more particular'ly to means for pivotally supporting and adjusting such type of bottoms to the required position in connection with the bedstead, in order that the desired angle of inclination of the bottom may be readily secured to adapt the same to the comfort and requirements of invalids and others, in cases in which it is desirable that the head portion of the bed shall be elevated with respect to the foot portion thereof.

rIhe principal objects of my invention are first, to provide simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive means for application to a bedstead and the bottom thereof for pivotally supporting and adjusting the bottom to the required angle of inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead; second, to provide a bedstead with means for supporting a bottom without the employment of lateral slats detachably or otherwise securedto slat-bearers connected with the side-rails or stringers thereof; third, to provide a bedstead with a bottom having trunnions extending therefrom and engaging bearings or seats applied to or set into the side-rails or stringers of the bedstead and with angle irons or supporting devices adapted to the bedstead for holding the bottom normally in position at the head-board portion thereof; fourth, to provide a bedstead with supports or brackets having vertical pins or studs adapted to engage in apertures of the bottom-frame and the bottom provided with trunnions detachably held in the siderails or stringere of the bedstead for permitting of the adjustment of the bottom to the desired angle of inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead pivotally supported to the side-rails thereof; fifth, to provide a bedstead with a readily-detachable wovenwire o1' spring-bottom pivotally supported in I position Without the employment as a means of support therefor, of lateral slats, whereby an invalid bedstead is provided which can be kept clean and absolutely free from vermin; and sixth, to provide a bedstead with supporting. means having locking devices for holding in normal position a detachable pivotally supported woven-wire or spring-bottom. ,Y

My invention consists of the improvements in bedsteads and bottoms therefor, constructed and arranged substantially in the manner hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature, scope and characteristic features ot' my invention will be more fully understood from the following description takenl in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of a bedstead, showing a woven-Wire or spring-bottom pivotally supported in position therein, and also showing means for elevating the bottom to the required angle of inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead embodying features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a similar view of a section of the longitudinal bottom frame with its trunnions and its seat adapted to be applied to the side-rail of the bedstead. Fig. 3, is a similar view of the forward portion of the woven-wire or spring-bottom with the means applied thereto for adjusting the bottom from the head-board of the bedstead to the required inclination with respect to the plane thereof; and Fig. 4, is a similar View of an angle iron or supporting device with a pin or stud projecting therefrom and a portion of the base-frame of the bottom with an opening therein, adapted to engage the pin and rest upon the iron or support suitably applied or secured to the bedstead.

Referring to the drawings at, is the headboard and c', the foot-board of abedstead provided respectively with legs a3 and 0.4.

b and b', are the side-rails or stringers suitably secured at the respective extremities thereof to the head and foot-boards.

In the construction of the side-rails or stringers b and Lb', Slat-bearers usually provided as a part thereof, are dispensed with, and hence is effected a considerable savingin the expense of production thereof', as well as a saving in the labor of keeping such siderails clean or free from vermin, which have been regarded as harbors therefor.

Beyond a point midway in the length ofthe respective side-rails or stringers l) and b', are screwed bearing plates c, for a purpose to be presently explained.

e, is a bottom provided with longitudinal side-strips e and c2, and with transverse end strips c3 and e, supporting in position a wovenwire web e6, or other preferred form of top tightly drawn or stretched and suitably secured to the respective strips and with preterably springs g, or similar means interposed between the woven-wire top web and the strips e', c2, e3 and e4, of the bottom c. rlhis bottom is provided with side trunnions e5, adapted to engage in the recessed portions c', of the bearing plates c, applied or screwed to the respective side-rails b and b', in order to permit of the adjustment of the bottom to the desired angle 0f inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead. In the present instance the trunnions c5, comprise pins having V-shaped parts resting upon the recesses c', so that knife edge trunnions are formed and aiord the bed bottom frame freedom of motion.

f and f', are perforated strips pivotally attached to the upper end of the bottom frame and inserted through staples 7L and h', suitably secured to the head-board a, of the bedstead and provided with tightening screws or other similar devices 1.' and fi', to permit of the bottom e, pivotally supported by means of the trunnions e5, to the side-rails b and Z9', being elevated to any required angle of inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead, thereby adapting the same to the requirements of invalids and to others, and especially for use in cases in vwhich elevation of the head portion of the bottom is desirable, as well as requisite for the comfort and safety of the person resting thereon. The upper extremity of each of the straps f and f is provided with handles or loops j and j', in order to furnish the means whereby the straps may be readily adjusted to the required position and secured by means of the tightening devices z' and i', brought into engagement with the saine through the staples h and h'.

To the head-board a, of the bedstead, is applied angle irons or brackets 71;, provided with projecting pins or studs 7c', adapted to engage in openings Z, in the base-frame of the bottom e, as shown in Fig. 4, whereby the bottom in its normal position is locked as well as prevented from lateral displacement or sidewise motion. In some cases it may be desirable to provide angle-irons or brackets of the type shown in Fig. 4, at the foot-board portion a', of the bedstead, as well as at the head-board portion a, thereof, in which event the trunniou c5, of the bottom c, serves as a means of additional support to the bottom, so that abnormal sagging is thereby entirely obviated while the bottom is in its normal or operative position in contact with and locked to the angle irons or brackets 7c.

The operation of the bottom and adjustment of the same to the required angle of inclination with respect to the plane of the bedstead for the purposes explained, will be understood from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings without further detail explanation and description thereof.

Having thus described the nature and objects 0f my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, in a bedstead, of head and foot boards supported in position by siderails having between their centers and the footboard bearing plates provided with V-shaped recessed seats, a bed-bottom frame provided with end and side strips, plates provided with lateral tapering pins secured to the strips ot' the bed-bottom frame and detachably engaging in the recessed seats of said bearingplates, straps attached to the end strip of the bed-bottom frame and adapted for insertion through staples secured to the head-board and provided with set-screws, and angle irons or brackets secured to the head-board, and provided with vertical pins or studs adapted to engage in openings provided in the upper end strip of the bed-bottom frame, all arranged as shown and for the purposes described.
