SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,477, dated July 8, 1884. Application filed May 26, 1883. (N0 model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HELEN M. BURLEY, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings annexed to and forming part of the same, fur

nishes afull and clear description thereof, suf-' ficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and operate the same.

The object of my invention is to furnish means by which inva-lids can be moved upon and from their beds with ease and transported from one piace to another without the shock and fatigue which often accompany the lifting of a person bodily from his bed and his re moval without a vehicle. 1

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of a bed containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof.

In Fig. 1, A isthe frame of an ordinary double bedstead, having the bar or side piece, B, easily removable. One half of the slatted A frame-work, as shown at O, is made rigid, as

in any of the ordinary styles of bedsteads, for the purpose of supporting a mattress, and is intended to be provided with a single or halfwidth mattress. The'other half, D, is made substantially like the frame of a reclining or folding chair, and capable of being withdrawn from the frame-work of the bedstead by taking down the bar B. -Fig. 2 shows the construction of said portion D. I prefer to build it with three sections having hinges at e c, which allow the head end F to be raised to suit the inclination of the individual, and hinges at f f, which allow the foot end to be depressed to accommodate it to the lower limbs of the patient. Another hinge at g 9 allows the extremity to be tilted up as a rest for the feet, if desired, and also affords a means for allowing the frame-work to be let down from off the support -i,on which it rests when extended to form part of the double bed. The portable or chair portion of the bed is provided with suitablesupports or legs, Z Z, provided with casters or rollers to facilitate its removal, and with any of the ordinary and well-known mechanism adapted to the raising and depressing of the sections of a recliningchair, an example of which is shown in the drawings, Fig. 2. This chair portion, when extended horizontally, may have its joints made rigid by bolts opposite the hinges, or by any other suitable and well-known means, and the head portion F, resting on the bar 0 at the head of the bed, and the foot portion L, resting on the bar 2' at the foot of the bed, while the side bar, B, is inserted in place, constitute a firm and substantial portion of the double bedstead,with its mattress or cushion corresponding with the mattress on the rigid portion of the bed.

The advantage of this improvement will be seen in that it allows the patient to be gently turned from one side of the bed to the other, allowing the bed to be freshly made up. The patient while lying upon the bed can have the head and shoulders raised and thelower limbs depressed to relieve the monotony of the posi tion, or to gratify the pleasure of the invalid, and the side bar, B, being removed, the section D may be withdrawn at pleasure and treated as a rolling-chair. The patient may be moved to a. window or other desired looation without requiring the services of aperson to lift the patient, or annoying the latter by the lifting. Such apparatus will also be found useful and valuable for many surgical operations.

- Having thus described my improved bed, I do not claim, broadly, a bed made in sections which can be taken apart, for that, I am aware, is old; nor do I claim a sectional bed with provisionmade merely for raising the head portion and depressing the foot portion, but
