Description
UNITED StrrrrEs PATENT OFFICE.,
FREDERICK MAHLER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN, BED-BOTTOMS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,060, dated August 11, 1874 ;l application tiled May 15,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAHLER, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a vertical crosssection. Fig. 4 is a plan of one end, showing the adjusting arrangement. Fig. 5 is a diagram, showin g the device for leveling the bed.
My invention relates to a bedbottoin, which is hung on a central pivot for tle purpose of setting the bed at any inclination, and in which the ends are hinged, so as to be turned up at any desired angle. rIhe invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
A is the rectangular frame which supports the bed, .the same resting upon the ledges a a, of the bedstead, in the usual manner. B is the rocking fram e, which is pivoted centrally at b to standards C C 011 opposite sides of the frame. This allows a rocking motion to the bed, by which it can be set at any inclination. D D are springs beneath the rocking frame, which give proper elasticity to the parts, and prevent loose motion. E is the center frame, and E E the adjusting-sections, which support the corresponding mattress-frame G and sections G G. The center parts E G are made fast to the rocking frame B, While the end sections E G are hinged at e e to the parts E G, being separate and independent from each other in their actions. H H Hf is the mattress, made in sections to tit the parts G G G. I I are ratchet-bars, attached fast on the under side of the sections Ef E', and consite end cords dvd are attached to the pawls,
and pass around pulleys h h, and thence, being connected together at g, they pass over a pulley, f, at the side of the bed, and have a give a dii'erent angle to the ends of the bed'.
If desired, the two cords may be separate, instead of being attached together, and be operated independently of each other. L L are slides resting crosswise under the rocking frame at each end ofthe bed. They have projections k 7c at each end, standing at such a height that when the bed is level they rest under and Ain, contact with the rocking frame and support it, as shown in Fig. 2. When pushed back the projections come in coincidence with slots l l of the rocking frame, Fig. 5, which they enter, thus allowing the rocking frame to be inclined. The slides rest in slots or ways of the supporting-frame A, and are held in position by suitable springs m m.,
A bed-bottom constructed as above'described is very convenient, especially for invalids, as the bed itself can be inclined to any position at either end, or the ends of the bed itself can be set at any angle to raise the head or the feet of the occupant.
It will be noticed that the end sections E E are separate from the parts G G', which they support, and therefore allow the necessary vertical adjustment of the mattress-frame without binding.
Having thus described my invention, what VI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the center frame and` the hinged end sections, provided with racks for adjusting the same, with the rocking frame pivoted to brackets on the supporting-frame, substantially as described, and for the object specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed myname in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK MAHLER. Witnesses PATRICK MCINTYRE, R. F. OscooD.
