"UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID F. STAMBAUGH, i OF EFFINGHAM, ILLINOIS.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,868, dated April 29, 1884. Application tiled May 7K, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom t mayA concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. STAMBAUGH, acitizen of the United States, residingat-Effingham, in the county of Eflingham and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in spring bed-bottoms; and it has for its objects to provide a spring bed-bottom that will be cheap and simple in construction, and which will accommodate itself to the weight of the occupant, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a partial plan view of my improved bed-bottom, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a rectangular frame, the transverse end bars of which are set at an angle, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. About midway between the ends of the longitudinal rails B are secured the transverse slats C, upon which are secured the spiral springs D, which support the longitudinal slats E. The springs at their tops are connected together by means of links E', the springs at each side being" connected to the side slats by means of suitable clips, F. The
longitudinal slats are connected to each other by means of the cords G, and the springs arek connected to the cords by lateral extensions H, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Thesaid longitudinal slats at their ends are connected to the end rails of the Aframe A by means of spiralsprings I, secured to the frame by screws or otherwise, as indicated. The spiral springs are connected at their tops by means of links B.
It will be seen Lthat as constructed when the occupants weight is light the tendency will be to depress the upright spiral springs below the slats; but as the weight increases the tendency will be to draw upon the end springs, thus i secured to said springs, the cords G, connecting the slats, and the longitudinal spiral springs I, connecting the slats at theends to the frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
D. F. STAMBAUGH.
