UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN HOYT, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,906, dated November 25, 1873; application filed October 7, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN HOYT, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and. State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in bed-bottoms; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby a simple, cheap, and durable bedbottom is produced.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the two supporting-bars, which are connected together by a number of crosspieces, c, the ends of which project beyond the The two side rails d, to which the slats e are secured, rest upon the coiled springs g, which rest upon and are fastened to the supporting-bars a. These rails d are wider at the head than the bottom, so as to give the bed a gradual slope from the head to the foot, and prevent the blood from running to the heads of the sleepers. To the under side of each rail are secured the pins or studs which t into the top of each spring g, and not only center the spring in position, but which, by coming in contact With the side slats a, prevent too great a Weight from coming upon the springs. Without these pins persons sitting or lying upon the side of the bed are apt to crush and break the springs, so that they soon become almost worthless, and the bed rolls uncomfortably Vfrom side to side. The slats e are secured crossWise to the side rails instead of in the usual manner, so as to make the bottom not only stronger, but firmer than can be done Where the slats run longitudinally. Passing down from the cross-pieces l., Which extend across from the side rails, and through the cross-pieces c and side slats a., are the rods or bolts o, which bind the bottom proper to the slats a, and prevent it from rising too far. Having thus described my invention, I claim- The bed-bottom, substantially as herein described, consisting` of the supporting-bars a., cross-pieces c l, springs g, studs c', side rails d, bolts o, and slats e, the parts being arranged as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto set my signature.
EDWIN HOYT. Witnesses SAML. H. COHEN, FRANKLIN MILLER.
