UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. PAFFORD, OF (JUERO, TEXAS.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,045, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed March 12,1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom of may concern Be it known that I, JOHN R. PAFFORD, of (Juero, in the county of De Witt and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a light, cheap, portable, and durable bed-bot-- tom which can be fitted to any bedstead.
Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of my bedbottom as applied to a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The bedstead shown is of common form, of which a is the head-rail, b the foot-rail, and c c the side rails. The bottom consists of the longitudinal slats d, that rest on cross-bars 6 project from the blocks g, that are screwed to the side rails, c, and rest on the strips 0 of those rails. The blocks 9 are four in number, and are secured two to each side rail, with the springs f projecting toward the head and foot of the bed. The springs f are attached firmly to the blocks 9 and project beyond the same to form a spring-support for the cross-bars e, to which the springs are connected in any The bars 0 are made in two pieces connected together by screwse', that pass through slots in the bars, which screws are fitted with nuts, whereby the bars 6 can be adjusted in length to fit any usual width of bedstead and clamped firmly together when adjusted. The slats d are attached to the bars 0 in any suitable manner, and move with said bars when the adjustment of the width is effected. At the under side of the bed-bottom are wire braces h, that are attached to the blocks 9 and the cross-bars 0. These will be applied after the bottom is properly adjusted for width, and serve to prevent the side rails of the bed from spreading and the bars efrom coming in contact with the side rails of the bedstead and causing friction and noise.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a bed-bottom, the combination of the four blocks screwed to the inside of bedstead and provided with spring-wire arms projecting toward the head and foot rails, the two adjustable cross-bars on said arms, supporting the longitudinal slats, and the four wire braces attached to blocks and cross-bars, all as shown and described.
