' To all whom it may con/cern,.- I
Beit known that I, IsHMAEL BAIE, a citizen UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ISHMAEL BAIR, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOVI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,493, dated December 4, 1883.
` Application iiled August 17, 1883. (No model.)
of the United States, residing at SouthBend, in the county i of `St.-Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certainnew anduseful;
Improvements in Bed-Slats, of `which the following is a speciiication,A reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certainnew and` useful improvements in elastic bed-bottoms, and it consists `in'arranging the slats of abedstead at equal distance apartto form a bedbottom, and support them in said position on elastic material. i
The object of my invention is, first, to
form a cheap and durable elastic bed-bottom,
adapted for use on all ordinary bedsteads; second, to construct the essential features of my invention in such a manner that they mayv be applied to the common slat-bottom bedstead, to change the same into a spring-bottom bedstead at a trifling expense. I attain these objects by means of the peculiar construction and ,p arrangement of the various parts of my invention, which will be more i'ully pointed out and described in the specification and claims, referring to the drawings accompanying this application and forming a part ofthe same, in which- Figure l is a bottom plan View of my invention, showing the different parts in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same, and Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the longitudinal slats andrings.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings. A
Reference being had to the drawings, A represents an ordinary bedstead, havingfootboards, side rails, and head-boards.
rails, B, in the usual u form, to ,receive the ends of cross-slats a, as shown `in Fig.'2, `said cross-slats being arranged to extend from the inner face of one side rail to the inner face of the opposite rail, and are usually placed one at the foot and one at the `head of the bedstead, as shownin Fig. 2; but in case the ordinary cross-slats are used (instead of extra slats prepared for the purpose) to form the bed.
p A pro-- 4o jection, d, is formed on the inner face of side.
Y longitudinal strips d', then an extra cross-slat is placed across the center of the bed in the usualform, as shown in Fig. l. Said crossslats c are formed about two inches wide, and Of sufiicient length to reach across the bedstead and on the under side ofthe same. Elastic web l) (preferably rubber) is secured by screw-bolts or rivets, each end of said web b being secured to each end of slats c, the remaining portion lbeing loose, `but lying close to the slat a.
Rings c are formed of metal, rounding on their outer surface and angular on their innersurfaces to fit around the cross-slat c and web Z2, as ishown in cross-section -in Fig. 2. Said rings, when placed in position on slats c, serveto keep the slats d in place and hold the elastic web against the same, while the web b is allowed to yield when weight is placed on said slats.
In forming a bed-bottom with my invention, cross-slats a are prepared in the usual form, when elastic web is secured by its ends to the ends of the slats a by means of nails or screwbolts e, said web Z) being about the same width as `the slats a, and of the same length, said web being drawn smoothly along the under face of slats a. Slats a are then placed in position in a recess formed in projection d, one at the foot and one at the head of the bed, and when desired, one at the center of the A longitudinal slat, b, is then inserted between the elastic web Z and the slats ce, said slat resting by its ends on the web b. A ring, i
like manner, followed by the rings c, and thus the operation is repeated until the bed-bottom is completed. rlhis construction forms a cheap` and durable elastic bed-bottom, that can be easily applied to almost any bedstead in use.
I am aware of the Patent No. 52,658, February 20, 1866, its construction, and the arrangement of the various parts of ythe same, and I therefore do notbroadly claim the same; but
What I do claim is as follows:
In a bed-bottom, the cross-slats c, construeted'as described7 whereby they will fit in In testimony whereof I affix my signature and rest on the interior supportng-langeA of in presence of two Witnesses.
a Slat bedstead, having each a rubber web or strip, b, secured to its lower sideI and at the extremities7 as shown7 in combination with longitudinal slats d', and the rings c, all oonstrueted and arranged substantially as shown and specified.
ISHMAEL BAIR.
